State Legislature
Debate continues on anti-affirmative action bill
NASHVILLE (AP) - State lawmakers are expected to continue discussion Wednesday on a proposal to eliminate affirmative action initiatives from higher education institutions in Tennessee.
The measure is scheduled for the Senate Education Committee.
Action on the proposal was delayed last week after lawmakers and educators said they were uncomfortable with the bill's language.
One concern of opponents is that the measure would jeopardize federal funding to colleges and universities.
Supporters say affirmative action should be removed from such institutions because it marginalizes certain individuals.
