NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are ending mixed on Wall Street, sending the Dow back below 14,000 points. McDonald's slumped as investors worried that spending on restaurants would fall.

The Dow Jones industrial average shed 35 points to end at 13,982 Wednesday. The Dow has gained 6.7 percent this year and is just 182 points below the record close it reached in October 2007.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index ended up less than a point at 1,520. The index climbed as high as 1,524 during the day, the highest since November 2007. It's up 6.6 percent this year.

The Nasdaq composite rose 10 points to 3,196.

About three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was in line with the recent average, 3.3 billion.
