Secretary of state warns of business scam

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) — The secretary of state's office is warning businesses about letters asking for money to file their annual reports.

The notices are from an entity called Corporate Records Service and began arriving in mailboxes last week.

The mailer looks like an official document and requests a $125 fee to file corporation annual reports.

According to a news release from the secretary of state, the mailers are causing confusion because Tennessee corporations are required to file annual reports with the secretary of state, and most corporations recently received annual report notices.

The standard fee to file the reports in Tennessee is only $20.

Secretary of State Tre Hargett urged Tennessee businesses to use caution before providing confidential information or credit card information to this company or any similar company.
