MTSU teams to test alternative fuels in cart race
MURFREESBORO (AP) — Teams of students from Middle Tennessee State University will be putting several types of alternative fuels to the test in a race around campus.
More than 20 students have modified four go-karts and one golf cart to run on five different types of fuel, including hydrogen, ethanol, propane, solar electric and hydrogen peroxide. The teams will test the speed of the vehicles during a race around Lightning Way and behind the Livestock Center on Thursday afternoon.
The university said in a news release that the students will make last-minute tweaks and adjustments to their vehicles before professor Cliff Ricketts, an alternative fuels researcher, starts the competition at 2 p.m. Central.
Ricketts called the end-of-the-semester race "the epitome" of experiential learning.
