The board of directors of Humanities Tennessee has named Tim Henderson as executive director of the organization following outgoing president Robert Cheatham’s retirement at the end of the year.

Henderson is currently the director of operations at Humanities Tennessee. He has been with the organization since 1998, serving as the director of digital programs before taking on his current role.

Cheatham has been president of Humanities Tennessee since 1978. Under his leadership, the organization has received awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities for its overall program, as well as numerous awards for specific projects. Cheatham also was the founding president of the Southern Humanities Media Fund. Among his significant accomplishments is the founding of the Southern Festival of Books: A Celebration of the Written Word in 1989. The festival has been the model for numerous other festivals around the country. Under his leadership, Humanities Tennessee’s community history and grants programs have supported museums, historical organizations and exhibits in small and large communities statewide.

Henderson earned a bachelor’s degree in English and philosophy from Union University and masters’ degrees in English and information science from Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee Knoxville, respectively.

Malanchuk joins Constangy, Brooks

National labor and employment law firm Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLP has hired attorney Peter Malanchuk as an associate in its Nashville office. He is focuses on defense of labor and employment matters in federal and state courts, as well as before administrative agencies, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Tennessee Human Rights Commission. His practice also includes work in race, sex, age and disability discrimination; wrongful termination claims; and state law claims.

Prior to joining Constangy, Peter served four years as a law clerk for Judge Juliet Griffin, Federal Magistrate Judge in the Middle District of Tennessee.

Malanchuk is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law. While in law school, Peter served as managing editor for The Journal of the Legal Professional. He was also a recipient of the CALI Award for Excellence in immigration law and a member of the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society.

Habitat for Humanity adds 3 staff positions

New Habitat for Humanity staff members include:

Kristin Flow, development associate. Flow is a recent graduate of the University of Virginia and formerly served as an intern for First Lady Crissy Haslam. She works with Habitat’s development department, building relationships with Habitat’s donors, organizing special events and working with volunteers and partner families.

Joshua Smith, construction manager. Smith has prior experience in residential construction.

Gary “Marty” Smith, ReStore sales associate and donation pickup driver. Smith provides customer service at Nashville’s two Habitat ReStores, which sells donated household, office and building supplies and appliances to the public.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville is an ecumenical Christian ministry that provides the life-changing opportunity for people to purchase and own quality, affordable homes. Prior to becoming homeowners, Habitat partner families attend home education classes, work at the build site and volunteer at Habitat’s retail outlet, the ReStore. Since it was established in 1985, Habitat of Greater Nashville has built or recycled more than 850 homes, over 600 locally, and served more than 2,000 family members including 1,325 children.

Zeitlin & Co. hires Green Hills broker

Pete Prosser has joined the Green Hills office of Zeitlin & Co., Realtors.

A licensed Realtor since 2005, Prosser is a member of the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors, where he currently serves on two committees and is a two-time Gold Award of Excellence recipient.

Over the course of his career, Prosser has worked extensively with builders on new construction homes. Prosser will focus on single-family projects while utilizing the company’s exclusive builder program, Zeitlin New Homes, to assist his builder clientele with the marketing of their homes.

Nonprofit Sweet Sleep adds staff members

Sweet Sleep, Inc., a Nashville-based nonprofit organization providing beds for orphaned and abandoned children locally and globally, has hired Shayla Beebe to serve as director of external relations and advancement and Dustin Tracy as development director. They will work to manage major donors, foundations and grants, events, educational outreach, and deepen current partnerships while cultivating new ones.

Beebe will be working with major donors, annual giving, organizations, merchandise and volunteers. She has worked in public relations, corporate sales, health management and in local and state government for the past 15.

As development director, Tracy will be focusing on grants, foundations, events and building relationships. While serving at his previous charity, Be An Angel Fund, he wrote grants, built relationships with donors and sponsors, managed web content and coordinated volunteers.

Williams law firm adds attorney to staff

Larry R. Williams and Jonathan Williams have hired Ashley Ladd to the firm of Larry R. Williams, PLLC as an associate.

Ladd, a native of Franklin, earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Middle Tennessee State University in 2007 and received her J.D. from the Nashville School of Law in 2012. While she attended law school, Ladd gained four years of legal experience working as the firm’s law clerk.

Her practice areas include family law, personal-injury litigation, workers’ compensation, wills, estates and probate, corporate debt collections, business litigation, contract and other document preparation and review.

VUMC’s Denny lands informatics award

Joshua Denny, M.D., M.S., assistant professor of Biomedical Informatics and Medicine and a key contributor to Vanderbilt University’s personalized medicine initiative, is the 2012 recipient of the New Investigator Award from the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA).

The award, which recognizes “early informatics contributions and significant scholarly contributions” to the field, was presented to Denny Nov. 3 during the AMIA’s 2012 Annual Symposium in Chicago.

Denny helped develop BioVU, which, with more than 150,000 unique genetic samples, is the world’s largest DNA databank linked to searchable, de-identified electronic health information.

Denny, who received his bachelor’s, medical and master’s degrees at Vanderbilt, joined the faculty in 2007. Since 2003, he has contributed to 75 scientific articles on the applications of informatics to diseases as diverse as rheumatoid arthritis and colorectal cancer.
