NASHVILLE (AP) - Sen. Andy Berke wants a review of a for-profit virtual school enrolling about 1,800 students around the state after test results put it in the bottom 11 percent.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports (http://bit.ly/PS3WPg) Berke wrote to Senate Education Committee Chairman Delores Gresham that the review is important as the state considers shifting millions of additional tax dollars to the school.

In his letter, Berke says that only 16.4 percent of students at the Tennessee Virtual Academy were proficient in math and 39.3 percent proficient in reading on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) tests.

On the Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System, the school received the lowest score.

Tennessee Virtual Academy's head, Josh Williams, said in an email that the school should not be judged by its first-year performance.
