NASHVILLE (AP) - A bill to ban truck stops within a half-mile of neighborhoods in Nashville and Memphis has failed.

The House State and Local Government Subcommittee on Wednesday voted 5-2 against the bill sponsored by Rep. Joe Towns. The Memphis Democrat argued that truck stops attract drugs, prostitution and other activities that could hurt home prices and be undesirable to communities.

House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick noted that the bill wouldn't affect existing truck stops, which would give those facilities an unfair business advantage. The Chattanooga Republican added that he wants to leave it up to local zoning laws to decide where truck stops can be built.

Gov. Bill Haslam and his family own Pilot Flying J, the country's largest truck stop chain. A spokesman didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.
