Groups cancel Music City Center conventions
NASHVILLE (AP) — Two groups have canceled planned conventions at Nashville's $585 million Music City Center over concerns the project will not be completed on time, and a third group might have to change plans as well.
Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau president Butch Spyridon told The Tennessean that the Southern Baptist Convention has moved a June 2013 meeting, and the Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association will do the same with its March 2013 convention (http://tnne.ws/wZ9yKA).
"It's disappointing but not devastating," Spyridon said.
The Nashville-based Southern Baptist Convention had planned to hold its annual meeting in its home city next year, but spokesman Sing Oldham said when it took longer than expected for the Metro Council to approve the project, the group decided to look elsewhere.
"We had to make that decision early on, and we didn't want to lock into something where the city of Nashville could come back lat er and say it couldn't be done," Oldham said. The convention will hold its 2019 meeting at Music City Center.
The American Trucking Association's Technology and Maintenance Council, like the barbecue association, has a March 2013 meeting scheduled. That is actually before the contractor's April 30, 2013 deadline to complete the convention center.
Spyridon said the CVB booked the early events because he expected the venue to be ready ahead of schedule. Now that looks unlikely.
The CVB has released the trucking and barbecue groups from their binding commitment letters but hopes to find another local venue for the trucking event, Spyridon said.
