NASHVIILLE (AP) — The Nashville hospital that performed Tennessee's first heart transplant will no longer be doing the surgeries.

Officials say the number of transplants at Saint Thomas has declined in recent years, while volume has increased at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, according to The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/tnkItd).

Vanderbilt will be the only hospital in Middle Tennessee offering heart transplants when Saint Thomas ends its program Jan. 14.

The number of transplants performed at Saint Thomas declined from 15 in 2009 to just eight in 2010, according to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.

Twenty-five heart transplants took place last year at Vanderbilt, which also was having better outcomes, scoring a 100 percent adult survival rate after transplantation compared with 81 percent for Saint Thomas, according to the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.

Survivorship is measured for a year from the time of surgery.
