Nashville study backs rapid transit buses
NASHVILLE (AP) — A study recommends Nashville dedicate rapid-transit bus lanes instead of building a trolley system along a busy east-west corridor.
Transportation planners estimate the project would cost about $136 million and it isn't clear how much local funding would be needed, according to The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/tH82yR ).
The project is aimed at moving people more swiftly from the Five Points area of East Nashville, through the downtown area and out West End to the western neighborhoods of the city.
The study estimates building a streetcar system would cost twice and much and draw only a few more riders.
Mayor Karl Dean said the city must improve mass transit to remain competitive with other cities.
