NASHVILLE (AP) — Two Democratic leaders say they've filed legislation to repeal a new law requiring photo identification to vote in Tennessee.

Senate Democratic Chairman Lowe Finney of Jackson and House Democratic Chairman Mike Turner of Nashville say the law threatens to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of Tennesseans.

The law, effective in 2012, requires voters to show a state or federal photo ID to vote. Some Tennesseans over 60 years old don't have photos on their driver's licenses.

Several groups have opposed the measure. The state estimates 126,000 registered voters don't have current driver's licenses with photos on them.

Says Finney: "We have a duty as lawmakers to protect the ballot box, but we also have a duty to protect Tennessee citizens' ability to vote."
