NASHVILLE (AP) — A state representative from Nashville hopes to overturn a state statute that nullified the city's ordinance extending a ban on gay discrimination to contractors who did city work.

Rep. Brenda Gilmore said the statute Gov. Bill Haslam signed into law in June amounts to state interference with local government, according to The Tennessean (http://bit.ly/o0PcLm ). The Democratic lawmaker said the new statute circumvents the city values and commitment not to discriminate against anyone.

The bill was crafted by Republican legislators Sen. Mae Beavers of Mount Juliet and Rep. Glen Casada of Franklin.

Casada said he doubts the Legislature would give "a second glance" to any bill seeking to change the current law. Casada said business needs a uniform code of conduct, especially in tough economic times.
