Unprecented times call for unprecedented tactics

Print | Front Page | Email this story

There are small businesses that could use boosting, and unemployed talent on the sidelines. Seems like a natural match except nobody knows who can do what and: a) employers don’t have the working capital to experiment with new hires; b) job hunters do not know where the openings are to apply to; or c) both parties are looking but don’t like what they see. Folks also are worn down from job hunting.

These are unprecedented times, of course, with unemployment double normal and not improving. It calls for unprecedented tactics. The best way to get work may be to just go to work, somewhere, a while – free. There is not a small business that would mind having someone aboard who could improve business, bring in more business or increase profits in some way. If you are skilled at any of these, pick the place you want to work and volunteer to do the work you know how to do and like to do. If it increases profits for the business, you found a job and the owner a way to grow. You have to earn it.

This is how many things are marketed today, so it might as well be you too. “Free this” and “free that” are everywhere as a way to engage two new parties. It may not be a marriage, but at least we are finally dating. Your resume touts achievement, skills and strong ambitions, right? Well, put them to work. Much better that than being a bystander and part of the agony. Key here would be doing what you enjoy. Maybe you bargain a bit for pay or benefits. Negotiate a job instead of applying for one.

This tactic might not work but will at least improve mental health and keep you sharp. And let’s not forget what else – it sets into motion my “Law of the Pinball.” You have shot yourself into play, and the longer you stay in play th4e better your chances.

There is always a job for someone who can improve a business. CFOs want the gross profit an employee brings in to be three times pay. Small businesses would settle for less. The need for a business to increase profits is greater than ever, so there is the need. Can you fill it? There is certainly a lot of good synergy going to waste due to the a, b, c stuff above. So break through it! Show yourself somewhere. Take a stab.

This economy is stuck and will be a while. It doesn’t have to be for a small business or willing worker.

How about using this approach: “I am going out to work tomorrow and create something somewhere.”
