Highway construction halts for Labor Day travel

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee transportation officials have told road contractors to knock off at noon Friday for the Labor Day weekend.

Transportation Commissioner John Schroer said the unofficial end-of-summer holiday is one of the busiest weekends on state highways.

TDOT says while construction will be halted until early Tuesday morning, drivers must continue to obey construction zone speed limits because some workers could still be at job sites, although there won't be any temporary lane closures.

The Auto Club South expects a slight drop in the number of car travelers this year, with about 541,000 Tennesseans driving to destinations over the Labor Day weekend.

For up-to-date travel information, motorists can call 511 from any land line or cell phone or visit www.tn.gov/tdot/tdotsmartway .
