Paul Ney, Waddey and Patterson, P.C., and Deborah Varallo, Varallo Public Relations, will serve as co-chairs of the 2011 Celebration of Mission to Service to be held on Wednesday, October 26, an event benefiting Catholic Charities of Tennessee, Inc. and St. Mary Villa Child Development Center.

The Spirit of Service Award will be presented during the event to an individual, group or business that has been a significant contributor to the well-being of the people served by Catholic Charities and St. Mary Villa and reflects the agencies’ values of love, goodwill, kindness, learning and laughter. Nashville Mayor Karl Dean received the award in 2010.

Crosslin & Associates adds 6 team members

Crosslin & Associates, P.C., a regional accounting and consulting firm, is pleased to announce the addition of several members to its audit, tax and administrative teams.

Joining the firm’s audit team are Jennifer Manternach, CPA, Lisa Hethorn, CPA, and Mary Helen Crafton.

Manternach comes to the firm as an audit supervisor with 10 years of experience in the public accounting field. She most recently served as an accounting manager for Take Care Employer Solutions in Franklin. She also worked as an audit manager for Dugan & Lopatka CPAs in Wheaton, Ill., an audit supervisor/manager for Stanislawski & Harrison CPAs in Pasadena, Calif. and a senior auditor for McGladrey & Pullen in San Diego, Calif. Manternach received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Hethorn joins as an audit senior, having most recently worked as a senior associate with Grannis & Associates, P.C., in Murfreesboro. She received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Trevecca Nazarene University and is a member of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Junior League of Nashville.

Crafton comes to Crosslin as an audit team member. She has held internships at Sarah Cannon Research Institute, Second Harvest Food Bank and Westminster Presbyterian Church. Crafton received her bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Colin Neff and Megan Walker come to the firm as tax team members.

Neff most recently worked as an accountant at Physician Services in Brentwood and also served as a tax intern for Lattimore Black Morgan & Cain. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and his master’s in accountancy with a tax concentration from Belmont University.

Walker most recently held a tax internship with Sims Boschert & Company in St. Charles, Mo. She received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and is pursuing her master’s in accountancy from Belmont University. Walker is a member of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Kelly Flannery joins the Crosslin administrative team as director of first impressions. She has served as an intern for the Susan Gray School. Flannery received her bachelor’s degree from The University of Tennessee-Martin and volunteers with Habitat for Humanity.

Cheekwood names director of giving

Stacy Eaton-Carter has been named the new director of corporate and individual giving for Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art. In this role, Eaton-Carter will focus on nurturing donor relations and growing contributions to the nonprofit botanical garden and fine art gallery.

Eaton-Carter is a certified fund raising executive who began her career with the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Nashville. She then served as both major gifts officer and director of the annual campaign for the Nashville Symphony.

Most recently, Eaton-Carter served as Heart Gala director for the American Heart Association, overseeing all fundraising efforts and managing a team of volunteers.

Edwards to oversee structural services

Steven M. Edwards, PE, has been promoted to firm wide manager of structural services for the Industrial and Building Services Group at architecture and engineering firm Barge, Waggoner, Sumner, and Cannon, Inc. (BWSC). Previously manager of structural services for the firm’s Nashville office, Edwards will now be responsible for structural engineering groups in all BWSC offices.

Edwards, who has more than 12 years of engineering experience, has been associated with BWSC since 2001. He has worked on a wide range of structural engineering projects including industrial facility structural designs, park facility design and government facility additions and renovations.

He is a 1999 graduate from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in construction engineering. A professional engineer licensed in six states, he holds the LEED Accredited Professional BD+C certification.

Edwards is a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the Structural Engineers Association (SEA) of Middle Tennessee, and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Edwards and wife reside in Pegram, TN.

Pam Tyson, Lisa Nierste Morris and John McElroy have recently joined Prudential Woodmont Realty.

Tyson will concentrate on residential real estate sales. She is a multi-million dollar producer, recipient of the Bronze Sales Award, the Horizon Award for integrity. She holds the ABR (accredited buyers representative), short sale and foreclosure resource. Pam holds membership in Williamson County Association of Realtors, Tennessee Association of Realtors, and National Association of Realtors. Pam was previously affiliated with Silver Pointe Properties.

Morris will be in residential sales. She is a multi-million dollar producer and holds the Bronze Sales Award. Lisa’s designations include ABR (Accredited Buyers Representative), GRI (Graduate Realtor Institute) and SFR (Short Sale Foreclosure).

VU Nursing School’s Weiner joins task force

Betsy Weiner, Ph.D., R.N., was recently appointed to the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Task Force on Delivery System Reform and Health Information Technology.

Weiner, who is senior associate dean for Informatics for Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, was sought out for her national expertise in health information technology.

The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) is a Washington, D.C.-based think tank established in 2007 by former Senate Majority Leaders Howard Baker, Tom Daschle, Bob Dole and George Mitchell to develop and promote efficient health care solutions that can attract public support and gain political momentum.

The BPC’s health task force will focus on four major areas of health reform policy: insurance reform and exchange development; options for state flexibility with Medicaid programs; issues confronting health professionals; and the most effective use of information technology in health care delivery and financing. The group is co-chaired by former U.S. Senators Bill Frist and Tom Daschle.

Calkins recognized for glaucoma research

David Calkins, Ph.D., vice chair and director of research at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Eye Institute, has been named to receive the 2011 Lewis Rudin Glaucoma Prize by the New York Academy of Medicine.

The $50,000 prize recognizes the most significant scholarly article on glaucoma published in a peer-reviewed journal. Calkins’ 2010 paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences described evidence for very early signs of injury from glaucoma that actually occur in the brain. Calkins is the first at Vanderbilt to receive the Rudin Prize.

The award highlights Calkins’ research in glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness in the world, affecting nearly 4 million people in the United States each year.

According to National Eye Institute projections, by the year 2020, 80 million people worldwide will have glaucoma. The risk of vision loss due to glaucoma increases seven-fold after age 55.

The prize was established in 1995 in honor of Lewis Rudin, the late New York City real estate developer and founder of the Association for a Better New York.
