Reid: Senate in session next week

Print | Front Page | Email this story

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate will be working next week, cancelling a weeklong July 4 break at a time the government is struggling to avoid a first-ever default.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada says there is too much to do for lawmakers to spend a week away from the Capitol.

Republicans said on Wednesday they wanted to scrap the break.

Despite the announcement, it's not clear whether any negotiations will be held on legislation to cut future deficits and raise the debt limit.

The Obama administration says that the government could default, with potentially catastrophic effects on the economy, unless the debt limit is raised by Aug. 2.

The current debt limit is $14.3 trillion.
