Haslam: Tennesseans don't take healthy behavior seriously
NASHVILLE (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam says Tennesseans don't take healthy behavior seriously enough and he hopes a health and wellness task force he's created will change that.
The Republican governor discussed the intent of the panel with reporters and health care advocates in Nashville on Thursday. Among those in attendance was former U.S. Sen. Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican and heart transplant surgeon.
Haslam says there are many health issues people can't control, but there are preventive measures that can be taken to keep some health problems from occurring or escalating.
Frist says he plans to help the task force focus on a condition called atrial fibrillation, or AFib, when the heart quivers instead of beating normally. The heart problem, which raises the risk of blood clots that can cause a stroke, affects more than two million Americans.
