NASHVILLE (AP) — A proposal that would remove the cap on charter schools in Tennessee is headed for floor votes in both chambers.

The measure passed the House Finance Committee on a voice vote Wednesday evening and was approved 8-2 in the Senate Finance Committee.

Charter schools are funded with state and local tax dollars but don't have to meet some of the state regulations regular schools do as they try to find different ways to improve student learning.

Under current law, the number of charter schools is capped at 90 statewide. There are currently 40 in all: 25 in Memphis, 10 in Nashville, three in Hamilton County and one each in Knoxville and Shelby County.

Besides removing the cap, the legislation also allows any student in the charter school's jurisdiction to attend.
