NASHVILLE (AP) — A proposal that would require Tennessee's employers to prove their employees are legally authorized to work in the U.S. is headed for a full House vote.

The measure sponsored by Republican Rep. Joe Carr of Lascassas passed the House Finance Committee on a voice vote Wednesday evening. The companion bill is awaiting a vote in the same committee in the Senate.

Another proposal that would require agencies to verify that applicants for public benefits are legally eligible for them has been delayed until next year mainly because of $1.5 million tab that couldn't be worked off this session.

Opponents of the bills include the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the National Federation of Independent Business.

They say the measures, which would require employers to use the federal E-Verify program, would cost businesses time and money without solving the problem of illegal immigration.
