change:healthcare has announced the addition of Howard McLure as chairman of the board. McLure also will transition to chief executive officer over the next several months, replacing company founder Christopher Parks, who will move to chief development officer to lead continued development of the company’s platform and strategic relationships.

The president of CVS/Caremark Pharmacy Services from 2007 to 2009, where he presided over a $50 billion operation and 15,000 employees, McLure will lead change:healthcare through its next stage of growth as the company continues to gain significant traction with its Cost Transparency Solution.

McLure served eight years in various roles, including CFO, senior executive vice president and COO at Caremark (acquired by MedPartners in 1996). As CFO, McLure was instrumental in driving PBM revenue growth from $2.5 million to $37 million in just six years and took a leadership role in the 2004 acquisition of AdvancePCS. As president of Caremark Pharmacy Service, was the driver behind the development of creative consumer-facing pharmacy solutions unique to the PBM industry that generated both financial success and value for retailers, employers and consumers.

Prior to his career at CVS/Caremark, McLure spent 14 years in senior management roles at Magellan Health Services, an operator of psychiatric hospitals and behavioral management care, where he provided accounting leadership in numerous acquisitions, transactions and divestitures.

McLure is a certified public accountant and member of the American Institute of Public Accountants. He earned a BAA in accounting from the University of Georgia.

F&CS names McSurdy its executive director

Family & Children’s Service (F&CS), an organization that helps families, children and individuals achieve self-sufficiency, family preservation and emotional well-being, has named veteran human services professional Michael McSurdy as its executive director, effective May 2.

McSurdy, the former Vice President of Programs at Oasis Center, brings more than 20 years of professional experience, including 3 years of clinical practice, to Family and Children’s Service.

A graduate of The University of the South, McSurdy began his career as a child and family therapist then moved on to become Program Manager of the Foster Care, Adoptions and Independent Living Program for the University of Tennessee College of Social Work. He then served as Director of Foster Care Services for the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, where he supervised statewide policy development and foster care programs. While serving in his most recent role as vice president for programs at Oasis Center, McSurdy received a scholarship from the Center for Non-Profit Management and obtained a master’s degree in business administration from Vanderbilt University.

Powell elected to TMA Board of Trustees

James E. “Pete” Powell, MD, MMHC, of Franklin, has been elected to the Tennessee

Medical Association (TMA) Board of Trustees.

Dr. Powell was chosen for the post by TMA members in February and was installed during the association’s 176th annual meeting held in Nashville in April.

The TMA Board of Trustees (BOT) is responsible for the implementation and direction of association activities between sessions of the House of Delegates, the TMA’s governing body.

A 2008 graduate of the TMA Physician Leadership College, Powell has served the TMA in numerous roles, including as a member of the Practice Management and Quality Committee and the Public Health Committee, and is a current delegate to the TMA from the Williamson County Medical Society.

Board certified in pediatric and internal medicine, Powell is assistant chief medical officer for Vanderbilt Health Williamson County. Powell serves on a senior leadership team for Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is also a clinical preceptor for residents at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. In 2010, Powell was among those from Vanderbilt Williamson recognized when the facility received the “Outstanding

Business” Award from the Williamson County Franklin Chamber of Commerce.

At Vanderbilt Medical Center, he serves on the Credentials Committee, Vanderbilt Home Care Advisory Board and Radiation Oncology Advisory Board. He is chair of the Operations Committee for the nonprofit Grace Medical Clinic and serves as outpatient medical director for the Health Spring Independent Physician Organized

Delivery System (IPOD).

In addition to the TMA and Williamson County Medical Society, Dr. Powell is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Physician Executives and the American Medical Group Association. Previous awards include the 2009 Dean’s Award for Highest Academic Performance at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management

Dr. Powell received his undergraduate degree in chemistry and his medical degree from the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Crismon picked to lead Murfreesboro Legal Aid

The Legal Aid Society, Tennessee’s largest non-profit law firm, announced today that staff attorney Andrae Crismon has been named managing attorney for the Murfreesboro office.

Crismon joined the Legal Aid Society in 2007. He primarily handled civil litigation matters including divorce, orders of protection, housing, unemployment appeals and social security cases.

Crismon is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and Vanderbilt University School of Law, where he served as associate editor of the Journal of Transnational Law. He previously worked as a contract attorney for The Law Offices in J. Houston Gordon. In 2006, he served as in-house counsel and director of operations for the coordinated statewide campaign for the Democratic Party of Tennessee. He has served in the Office of General Counsel for the Tennessee Department of Health and clerked for the Honorable Inez Smith Reid of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

Cheekwood names VP for finance, administration

J. Randall (Randy) Boyd has been named the new Vice President of Finance and Administration for Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art beginning Monday, April 18. As the VP of Finance and Administration, Boyd will be responsible for all financial areas in addition to facilities, technology, security and retail sales. Randy comes to Cheekwood from the Adventure Science Center where he served as the Chief Financial Officer since 2009.

During his 20-year career, Randy has been associated with the healthcare, real estate, mortgage banking, financial services and music industries in Nashville. Prior to his position at the Adventure Science Center, Randy was the Controller and CFO of PassAlong Networks, a Franklin-based software development company and digital entertainment website specializing in Nashville’s music industry. From 1998 to 2004, Randy was the CFO of Equifax Credit Information Center, also in Nashville.

Randy holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Lipscomb University.

Heart Association honors Williams

The American Heart Association has named volunteer H. Newton (Newt) Williams of Nashville “Volunteer Advocate of the Year” for the United States. The award was announced at the association’s annual Congressional Lobby Day, You’re the Cure on the Hill, in Washington, D.C. on April 12, 2011.

Williams, a U.S. Army veteran, former corporate executive and community activist, has played a key role in the passage of heart-healthy initiatives, including state menu labeling regulations. He has served several terms as Tennessee Advocacy Subcommittee Chair for the association, and as an Advocacy Committee Member for the Greater Southeast Affiliate. He also supports health reform and continues to participate in face-to-face meetings with his representatives to advance the association’s policy priorities.

The Volunteer Advocate of the Year award is given to someone who has made a generous commitment of time, energy and talent to the association in advocating directly to key lawmakers, recruiting new advocates and serving as a grassroots organizer on issues vital to the association’s advocacy goals.

You’re the Cure on the Hill 2011 brought more than 300 volunteers and heart disease and stroke survivors to the nation’s capital to ask members of Congress to increase funding for research supported by the National Institutes of Health and end childhood obesity by co-sponsoring the FIT Kids Act and supporting the Safe Routes to School program to increase physical activity.

Laiolo joins Pinnacle as sales assistant

Cara Laiolo has joined Pinnacle Financial Partners as a sales assistant for Pinnacle Asset Management. Pinnacle Asset Management is the firm’s unit that provides fee-based investment management.

Laiolo brings eight years of experience and comes most recently from SunTrust Investment Services, where she served as an investment officer.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Aquinas College and is based at Pinnacle’s Green Hills office.
