MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Economic development officials in Memphis want to close records about businesses they're trying to bring to the city. Any documents filed with the city or Shelby County are subject to the open records law.

The Memphis City Council is to vote on Tuesday on supporting its legislative agenda to the General Assembly.

An official of the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce told The Commercial Appeal the state can keep such records secret and local governments want the same ability.

Memphis chamber senior vice president Dexter Muller says a site selection consultant told local officials if they couldn't keep information secret, he wasn't coming to the city.

Richard Hollow, attorney for the Tennessee Press Association, says companies who want to do business with government should understand they're doing business with the people.
