Defense also must shoulder blame for losses

There is much to blame for the Tennessee Titans’ ineptitude in their 1-6 start. The primary problem seems to be where to assign it first.

The offense has shouldered its share with quarterbacks Will Levis and Mason Rudolph combining for 10 interceptions to go along with the Titans losing six fumbles in seven games.

Special teams have been atrocious, getting to the point that it might good for special teams coordinator Colt Anderson to pay his rent weekly rather than signing a long-term lease.

But let’s not overlook the defense. Yes, the defense was ranked first in the league (for what that’s worth) going into Sunday’s game. But that stat is only based on yards. The true measure of a good defense is one that consistently pressures the quarterback and forces turnovers, and the Titans have done neither.

Through seven games, the Titans have just three takeaways. The minus-13 turnover differential ties them with the Las Vegas Raiders for last in the NFL.

One of the two fumble recoveries the Titans have came courtesy of special teams on a muffed kickoff.

So, a defense that was supposed to be placing an emphasis on getting the ball out – Dennard Wilson came from the Baltimore Ravens, a team that has made a living doing that for 25 years – can’t find a fumble or an interception with both hands and a GPS.

Coaches like to talk about complementary football, as in all three phases working together. Brian Callahan addressed it Sunday, saying the Titans were not doing enough of that. He’s right, as the Titans have done just the opposite, killing any chance of victory in the process.

“We’re just trying to play better football, and that’s my focus and putting guys out there,” Callahan says. “We fight. We play hard, but we’ve got to do a lot better, and right now, it’s not a product that people are excited to watch. That’s the way it is. We’ve got to do something about that.”
