Three Periods: Hot Preds look to improve status
By Jim Diamond
As the calendar turns to April and the number of games remaining in the regular season moves into single digits, the Predators look to continue on their torrid stretch built over the last month plus with the playoffs appearing on the horizon.
Two of the three upcoming opponents are locks to make the playoffs while the other is attempting to claw its way into the postseason.
First Period
Saturday, March 30 at Colorado Avalanche
This will be the third and final meeting of the regular season between the Predators and Avalanche. Despite Colorado being in contention for the top spot in the Central Division and Western Conference, the Predators have won both matchups so far this season, with both of those games being played in Nashville.
This game could very well be a preview of a first-round playoff series. The Predators are likely to finish in one of the wild card positions, which means they will face either the Central Division winner or the Pacific Division winner depending on how the points shake out. The division winner with the most points will play the second wild card team, with the other division winner playing the first.
The Predators and Avalanche met, albeit briefly, in the first round in the 2022 playoffs, with the Avalanche sweeping that series en route to winning the Stanley Cup. Juuse Saros missed that series due to a high ankle sprain.
Second Period
Tuesday, April 2 vs. Boston Bruins
Like the Avalanche in the West, the Bruins are battling for the top spot in both the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference. The Atlantic looks like it will go down to the wire, with the Bruins and Florida Panthers vying for the division lead.
The Predators last faced the Bruins way back in mid-October in Boston, with the Bruins prevailing 3-2. Both Nashville goals in that game were scored by Colton Sissons.
The Bruins are led by superstar forward David Pastrnak, who will be in the conversation for the Hart Trophy given to the NHL’s most valuable player in the regular season.
Third Period
Thursday, April 4 vs. St. Louis Blues
The Blues are facing an uphill battle in their hope of making the playoffs. St. Louis and Minnesota are both chasing both the Predators and the Vegas Golden Knights for the West’s two wild card berths, but as the number of games fade, the odds of the Blues catching either Nashville or Vegas decrease.
The Predators have won both games played against the Blues this season, with both games being played in St. Louis in a couple of high-scoring affairs. Filip Forsberg and Luke Evangelista have both scored three goals against the Blues in the two games played.
