Three Periods: Hot Predators on the road again
By Jim Diamond
After their recently completed five-game homestand, the Predators become road warriors once again, starting a stretch of four consecutive away from Bridgestone Arena. Nashville begins the roadie with one of the NHL’s best road records at 18-10-2, buoyed by their recent five-game sweep on their last road trip. It was the first time in franchise history the Predators won all the games on a trip of at least five games.
First Period
Saturday, March 9 at Columbus Blue Jackets
With an 11:30 CST opening faceoff against the Blue Jackets, the Predators will need to be up and ready to face Columbus, the only team that Nashville has yet to play this season. The teams will complete their two-game season series in Nashville April 13.
This will be the 100th all-time matchup between Nashville and Columbus. To say the Predators have had the upper hand with their former Central Division foes would be an understatement. Nashville has won 67 of the previous 99 games with one tie (remember those?) and eight overtime losses. The .722 points earned percentage Nashville has against Columbus is the highest of any opponent.
Second Period
Sunday, March 10 at Minnesota Wild
The Predators spring ahead with the second half of the road back-to-back set against the Wild in another matinee. Look for Juuse Saros and Kevin Lankinen to split the Columbus and Minnesota games in goal.
Minnesota is one of the teams chasing the Predators for one of the Western Conference’s two wild card playoff berths. With their Leap Day 6-1 win over Minnesota in Nashville, the Predators earned a key four-point standings swing and put a little more breathing room between them and the John Hynes-coached Wild.
So far this season, the Predators have won all six of the second half of back-to-back games.
Minnesota joins Calgary, St. Louis and Seattle as teams trying to knock the Predators out of a playoff spot.
Third Period
Wednesday, March 13 at Winnipeg Jets
After a couple of days off, the Predators make the relatively short trek from the Twin Cities across the border to the province of Manitoba to face the Jets. Winnipeg, Dallas and Colorado have been battling it out all season for the top spot in the Central Division. Even with the Predators’ recent hot streak, catching up with the top three will be difficult.
The teams have split the first two games against each other so far this season, with both winning on home ice. Following this tilt, they will meet once more, April 9 in Nashville.
