Vanderbilt suspends forward Dort after arrest for felony aggravated assault
NASHVILLE (AP) — Vanderbilt has suspended Lee Dort after the forward was charged with felony aggravated assault Sunday and released on a $10,000 bond.
"We are aware of the matter and have suspended student-athlete Lee Dort from the basketball team pending the outcomes of the university's and the legal system's processes," Vanderbilt spokesman Jacob Bell said in a university statement.
Dort was booked into the Davidson County Jail early Sunday morning before being released on bond about 10 hours later.
The Tennessean cited an arrest affidavit that campus police were called at 1:14 a.m. Sunday for screams inside a dorm room, and Dort's ex-girlfriend told police that Dort had taken her phone, shoved her against a wall and a bedpost inside her room. As she slid down the bed, she told police Dort gripped her neck.
Officers noted a scratch on the woman's shoulder and a red mark on her upper arm. The affidavit says Dort was questioned and arrested at Memorial Gymnasium where Vanderbilt plays.
Dort, who turned 21 Saturday, played 17 games last season averaging 1.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-10, 245-pound forward from McKinney, Texas, has played seven minutes in one game after missing the first four games with an injury for the Commodores (3-3).
