Titans also leading push to hire female coaches to staff
By Terry McCormick
Under Mike Vrabel, the Tennessee Titans have seemingly gone above and beyond not only in reaching out to qualified minority coaches but also being at the forefront of hiring women for jobs in areas other than just media relations or sales.
Just this week, the Titans announced Haley Roberts, who had done an internship with the club this summer, was being added to the team’s strength and conditioning staff full time.
This is the third female hire on the football operations staff this offseason. The Titans added Lori Locust as a quality control coach for the defense, making her the first full-time female assistant coach in the franchise’s history.
Locust comes to the Titans after spending the past four seasons as an assistant defensive line coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Also, earlier this summer, the Titans announced the hiring of Sarah Bailey to their front office. Bailey will head up the team’s new foray into analytics and report to assistant general manager Chad Brinker, who has a background in that area from his time with the Green Bay Packers.
When asked about such diverse additions, Vrabel said it’s something important to him as a coach.
“Diversity is critical. Diversity of ideas and diversity in personalities is critical. For me, it’s always been about making sure that we can find a way to reach every player that we bring in here and having plenty of points of contact for our players,” Vrabel says. “Whether that’s with Chic Ejiasi, with Mitch (James Mitchell) and our player engagement, myself, Frank (Piraino) and his staff, our coaching staff, right? We asked that they find somebody that they can feel comfortable with and trust to reach out to.
“So that’s the biggest thing for me is that diversity provides that. We’re looking for the best candidates always. And we’ll do our best to continue to make sure that we’re hiring based on merit. And that’s what we try to do.”
