Moore hits 2 HRs, Beam has 10 Ks as Tennessee beats Charlotte, wins Clemson Regional
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Christian Moore went 2 for 2 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored, Zane Denton also hit a home run, and Tennessee beat Charlotte 9-2 on Sunday to win the Clemson Regional.
Tennessee (41-19), which beat the 49ers 8-1 on Friday to knock them into the loser's bracket, advances to the super regionals for the third consecutive season.
Moore led off the bottom of the second with a home run and Zane Denton, who smacked to homers in a 14-inning win over Clemson on Saturday night, hit a solo shot to cap a three-run bottom of the fourth and give the Volunteers a 4-0 lead.
Drew Beam (8-4) had 10 strikeouts in six innings pitched, allowing four hits and two runs. Camden Sewell threw two scoreless innings of relief before a 1-2-3 ninth by AJ Russell.
Charlotte's Austin Knight led off the fifth with a home run and Cam Fisher's double scored Blake Jackson in the top of the sixth to trim the deficit to 4-2 but Moore hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the inning.
Tennessee stretched its lead to 7-2 in the seventh. Christian Scott led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a single by Cal Stark and then scored when Maui Ahuna reached on a fielder's choice. Ahuna hit a ground ball to shortstop for what was originally ruled a 6-4-3 double play but, after video review, Ahuna was ruled safe.
Starter Andrew Spolyar (2-3) gave up four runs — one earned — over four innings for Charlotte (36-38).
