Tennessee to halt most highway lane closures for holidays
NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee drivers won't be slowed down by temporary lane closures for construction on interstates and state highways during upcoming holiday travel.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation said the lane closure hiatus will begin Dec. 20 at noon and last through early Jan. 2.
A few long-term closures will remain in place for safety. Workers may still be on site in some construction zones, and speeding through work zones could warrant a fine of $250 to $500, plus court fees and possible increased insurance premiums.
Citing AAA predictions, state transportation officials said 2.59 million motorists are expected to travel Tennessee roadways during the Christmas and New Year's holidays, an increase of 4.4% compared to 2018.
