LEBANON (AP) — The city of Lebanon, Tennessee, has drafted a zoning ordinance similar to one being discussed in Mt. Juliet that seeks to regulate abortion services in the city.

The Tennessean reports Lebanon Mayor Bernie Ash requested the ordinance after a new health clinic opened in a commercial area in Mt. Juliet and promised to later provide surgical abortions. Mt. Juliet officials then drafted an ordinance that required clinics that perform those abortions to be in industrial areas.

Mt. Juliet's ordinance passed its first reading. A second reading is set for April 8.

Lebanon Planning Director Paul Corder says his city is "looking at this now to be proactive." The drafted Lebanon ordinance has several prongs, one of which requires clinics to be "in character" and not create "an adverse effect."
