Lee: Capitol gun ban to remain in place

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) — Gov.-elect Bill Lee says he'll continue to keep guns banned in the Tennessee Capitol when he takes over the top office later this week.

Lee tells The Daily Memphian he won't change the current policy put into place by outgoing Republican Gov. Bill Haslam. However, Lee declined to comment further when asked about the potential pushback from gun rights groups.

People with state-issued handgun carry permits will still be allowed to be armed within Tennessee's legislative office complex

The National Conference of State Legislatures says 26 states ban civilian guns from being carried at their capitols. A handful of states have no restrictions, while others limit the practice to permit holders and lawmakers.

Lee, a Republican, is scheduled to be sworn in on Saturday.
