Vanderbilt introduces scholarship to honor Perry Wallace

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) — Vanderbilt has introduced a new scholarship to honor Perry Wallace, who became the Southeastern Conference's first black varsity basketball player when he suited up for the Commodores in 1967.

The Perry E. Wallace Jr. Basketball Scholarship will support Vanderbilt student-athletes, with recipients rotating between the men's and women's basketball programs.

Vanderbilt athletic director David Williams II says the scholarship "is an enduring way to extend Perry's legacy at Vanderbilt."

Wallace died Dec. 1 at the age of 69.

Vanderbilt retired Wallace's No. 25 jersey in 2004. The Southeastern Conference gave him the Michael L. Slive Distinguished Service Award last year.
