Free Legal Seminars at People’s Law School

This class covers “Debt Collection: Participants will learn what to do when debt collectors are harassing them or if they’re sued on a debt.” Individuals can register for one or several classes through Nov. 15 on a variety of topics, including:

• Oct. 18: Basics of U.S. Immigration: This course provides an introduction to the terms and concepts of U.S. immigration law, ways that people immigrate to the U.S., complexities and recent developments of immigration law and how to avoid potential scams.
• Oct. 25: Consumer Bankruptcy -- Liquidating or Restructuring Debt: Learn the basics and different types of consumer bankruptcy, who is eligible, what can and cannot be accomplished through bankruptcy and tips on choosing a bankruptcy lawyer.
• Nov. 1: Renters’ Rights: Students will learn their legal rights as a renter and how to assert them, what to look for in a lease, how to get their landlord to make repairs, how to get their security deposit back and other problems renters face.

Governor’s Housing Summit

Southern Festival of Books

Humanities Tennessee’s Southern Festival of Books has been held in Nashville each October since 1989. It is the original book festival, A Celebration of the Written Word, and has inspired hundreds of similar book festivals throughout the nation and beyond. The festival is free and open to the public. No advance registration or tickets are required. All seating is on a first-come basis. Friday noon-6 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday noon-5 p.m. Events will be held downtown in Legislative Plaza and Nashville Public Library. 2nd annual Battle of the Food Trucks

The competition will pit several of Nashville and Middle Tennessee’s popular mobile food vendors against each other as attendees sample food and vote for their favorite food truck amongst the contestants. Participating food trucks include: Biscuit Love, The Cupcake Collection, Deg Thai, Hit and Miss, Hoss Loaded Burgers, The Hot Spot, Jonbaylaya, Retro Sno, Riff’s, Smoke et al, Sugar Wagon, and Wrapper’s Delight, with more participants anticipated. At last year’s inaugural event, more than 500 guests voted Riff’s as the winner for the category “most savory dish” and The Cupcake Collection for the “best sweets” category.
