3. Starbucks quarterly revenue falls on weak traffic in US and China -

Starbucks' revenue fell 1% in the April-June period as customer traffic weakened in the U.S. and China.

But the Seattle coffee giant expressed optimism Tuesday that successful new products and improvements in efficiency — including faster drive-thru service and better equipment — will help turn things around in its next fiscal year, which begins later this fall.

4. Wood pellets production boomed to feed EU demand. It comes at a cost for Black people in the US South -

GLOSTER, Miss. (AP) — This southern Mississippi town's expansive wood pellet plant was so close to Shelia Mae Dobbins' home that she sometimes heard company loudspeakers. She says industrial residues coated her truck and she no longer enjoys spending time in the air outdoors.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Whether it's tapioca balls or computer chips, Taiwan is stretching toward the United States and away from China — the world's No. 2 economy that threatens to take the democratically ruled island by force if necessary.

7. Jackson Lewis adds Porter to Nashville office -

Nationwide employment law firm Jackson Lewis P.C. has hired Kaya Grace Porter as an associate for the firms Nashville and Atlanta offices.

Porter joins Jackson Lewis from Littler Mendelson P.C. and focuses her practice on representing employers in all aspects of employment law, including litigation and preventive counseling.

8. Nashvillians named to Nature Conservancy board -

The Nature Conservancy has elected five to its Tennessee board of trustees, including two from Nashville: Aaron Barrett and Lisa Calfee. They are joined by Matt Jernigan of Tullahoma, Philip Fieler of Memphis and Larry Blythe of Robbinsville, North Carolina.

9. Unemployment rate inches up to 3.2% -

Tennessee’s unemployment rate for September 2023 inched up slightly from the state’s all-time low rate of 3.1%. Data from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development showed the seasonally adjusted rate increased by 0.1% to 3.2% during the month.

10. Belmont names Spickard dean of medical school -

Belmont University has named Dr. Anderson Spickard as dean of the Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine. Spickard has been serving as interim dean for the college since June 2022 and began his tenure at Belmont in fall 2021 as associate dean for spiritual growth & development and professor of internal medicine.

11. Ultium Cells investing $275M to expand Spring Hill battery cell plant -

Ultium Cells LLC, a joint venture of LG Energy Solution and General Motors, will expand its Spring Hill battery cell manufacturing operations.

12. Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame inducts 5 -

The Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame recently inducted its 2022 class. New inductees are:

• Reginald Coopwood, M.D.: President and CEO of Regional One Health; former chief executive officer of Metropolitan Nashville Hospital Authority; former chief medical officer of Nashville General Hospital at Meharry Medical College.

14. Biden to tell Ohioans his policies will revive manufacturing -

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden wants to put the spotlight on a rare bipartisan down payment on U.S. manufacturing when he visits Ohio on Friday for the groundbreaking of a new Intel computer chip facility.

15. Bradley adds Sveadas to health care team -

Heather H. Sveadas has joined Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP as counsel in the health care practice group.

Sveadas has extensive experience advising health care providers, including hospitals, home health providers, federally qualified health centers, rural health clinics and physicians in regulatory matters and in litigation.

16. Highland Ventures to make Williamson home -

Highland Ventures Ltd. will invest $8.2 million to relocate its headquarters operations from Glenview, Illinois, to Brentwood, company officials say, creating 80 jobs during the next five years.

Located at 209 Powell Place, Highland Ventures’ new Tennessee headquarters will serve as the hub for the company’s brands: Family Veterinary Group, Stay Fit 24, Highland Pure Water & Ice and Legacy Commercial Property.

21. Belmont entrepreneur program ranked No. 30 -

Belmont University’s Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program has been ranked No. 30 overall on the 16th annual “Top 50 Undergraduate Schools for Entrepreneurship” list.

Belmont was also ranked No. 6 in the Southeast and continues to be the only program in Tennessee to be included in the Top 50 recognized schools.

22. Sony raises forecast as sales hold up amid COVID damage -

TOKYO (AP) — Sony reported Thursday that its profit fell 54% in the last quarter, mainly due to a one-time tax-related gain that inflated last year's number.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment company managed to maintain results despite the coronavirus pandemic, reporting a 13% rise in quarterly sales.

23. MTSU poll: Statewide growth in second quarter -

A new economic report from Middle Tennessee State University shows the state’s housing market continues to show signs of a recovery from the impact of COVID-19.

The MTSU Business and Economic Research Center’s statewide analysis for the second quarter “showed mostly positive outcomes,” with home sales increasing overall from the previous quarter and home prices up from the previous year across the state, noted report author Murat Arik, director of the BERC at MTSU.

25. Baker Donelson hires for real estate practice -

N. Courtney Hollins has joined Baker Donelson as a shareholder in the firm’s Nashville office and a member of the Real Estate Practice Group.

Hollins represents buyers, sellers, developers, investors, landlords, tenants, lenders and borrowers in commercial real estate acquisition, disposition, construction, development, leasing and finance transactions, workouts and restructuring.

26. Engel & Völkers partners with Pareto -

Engel & Völkers Nashville has partnered with Pareto Realty and will collectively do business under the Engel & Völkers name. Led by license partner Neal Clayton, this announcement adds 18 real estate advisers to Engel & Völkers Nashville, expanding its real estate service into Williamson County.

27. Stites & Harbison raises ABA Health ranking -

The American Bar Association Health Law Section has ranked Stites & Harbison, PLLC sixth in its eighth annual Regional Law Firm Recognition List for the South region for 2020.

28. Ascension West, Midtown gets new president, CEO -

Ascension Saint Thomas has concluded a national search with the selection of Shubhada Jagasia, M.D., MMHC, as president and CEO of Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital, Midtown and West campuses, effective May 1.

29. Educational Media moving to Nashville -

Educational Media Foundation, parent company to K-LOVE and Air1 radio networks, AccessMore podcasts and WTA Media, plans to move its global headquarters in Nashville.

EMF has been growing its Tennessee presence over the last several years. It recently expanded its studio, from which the K-LOVE morning show and Air1 programs now broadcast, and its promotions, AccessMore podcasting, live events and WTA Media teams have offices in the area already. Members of EMF’s content division will begin moving into the existing offices and temporary space this summer.

30. HCA, new partner to produce PPE -

Nashville’s HCA Healthcare has announced it has entered into a new joint venture business with A Plus International Inc. to expand access to personal protective equipment by manufacturing surgical and procedure masks in the United States.

32. Amazon delivers for Children’s Theatre -

Amazon has partnered with the Nashville Children’s Theatre for its 90th anniversary season, allowing the organization to expand its reach and offerings to students across Tennessee.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCT had to move its shows and classes online for participants. With this transition came additional costs of expanded web platforms and streaming services that were not originally anticipated. Because of Amazon’s new partnership with the 90-year-old organization, the NCT will be able to continue providing streaming opportunities to individual families as well as Nashville’s public school students.

33. Mainland launches New Heights District -

Nashville-based The Mainland Companies, LLC, working in partnership with Chicago-based Speedwagon Capital Partners, is creating New Heights District, an urban, mixed-use opportunity zone business district on the south side of downtown Nashville.

34. Cupcake Collection wins NAACP grant -

Nashville’s The Cupcake Collection is one of 10 Black-owned small business winners of the NAACP Powershift Grant.

The company, which also has a location in New Orleans, was founded by Mignon Francois, who serves as CEO.

35. Dickinson Wright named top law firm by Captive -

Dickinson Wright PLLC has been named “Law Firm of the Year” by both Captive Review (@Captivereview #USCaptiveAwards) and Captive International.

The inaugural US Captive Awards by Captive International honor the best-in-class providers across the full spectrum of disciplines active in the captive insurance industry.
