1. Neal & Harwell adds litigation associate -

Drew Holt has joined Neal & Harwell, PLC as an associate in the firm’s litigation group.

Holt earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School. During law school, he participated in Neal & Harwell’s Summer Associate Program and was a judicial intern for the United States District Court in Knoxville. He earned a B.A. in English language and literature and an M.A. in the humanities from the University of Chicago.

Let Freedom Sing: Nashville July 4th Fireworks and Concert. Celebrate the 4th of July at one of the largest fireworks shows in the county. Attendees can expect concert with headlining performance by Chris Young along with performance by YOLA, Girl Named Tom and Blessing Offor, and more, plus a pyrotechnic-synchronized performance by the Nashville Symphony. 4. FAFSA deadline extended for TN Promise applicants -

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission announced the Free Application for Federal Student Aid deadline for the Tennessee Promise scholarship program will be extended to Friday, May 31.

The new deadline provides high school seniors and their families additional time to complete their FAFSA and remain eligible for the state’s tuition-free higher education program.

5. MTSU survey: Tennessee business leaders more optimistic -

Heading into spring, Tennessee business leaders have a much more positive outlook about their industries, a sentiment trend that “has flipped” in the past year, the latest Tennessee Business Barometer by MTSU’s Jones College of Business finds.

6. Middle Tennessee summer camps guide 2024 -

Summer breaks provide children and young adults the space and time to experience something totally different from their daily lives – maybe an opportunity to connect with nature, ride horses or learn to sail. Camps can grant children not just the ability to participate in team-based activities, but to explore new interests and develop friendships that may last a lifetime.

Christmas parades begin across Middle Tennessee this weekend and continue the next weekend.

Grant Writing Workshop for Nonprofits. Join Maury Alliance and the Spring Hill Chamber for a comprehensive grant-writing workshop for nonprofits. Patrick McElhiney, director of grants at Columbia State, will provide an overview of the grant-writing process and equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to successfully secure funding. Some of the topics covered include researching and identifying funding opportunities, understanding grant guidelines and requirements, planning and research, proposal development, grant submission, proposal follow-up and implementation. 10. Real estate community loses a legend in Williams -

The Middle Tennessee real estate community lost one of its most successful, iconic characters Monday with the death of Lee Williams, the founder and owner of the Williams Company.

Williams earned his real estate license in 1977 with Sherwood Realty, the real estate wing of C&S Builders, one of the largest homebuilders in Middle Tennessee, building some 300 homes per year at that point. C&S projects were constructed in White House, Mt. Juliet, Portland, Fairview, Smyrna and Gallatin and were sold through federal affordable housing programs.

11. Metro runoffs early voting begins Aug. 25 -

Early voting for the Metro Nashville general election runoffs begins Aug. 25 and concludes Sept. 9. Election Day is Sept. 14.

Runoff elections for Metro Davidson County mayor and four at-large Metro Council seats were set after the initial general election didn’t produce majority winners.

12. Burr & Forman adds 2 attorneys in Nashville -

The Nashville office of Burr & Forman LLP has hired Summer J. Melton and Katherine “Kiki” R. Rogers.

Melton joins the construction & project development practice group as an associate. Her practice focuses on civil litigation, complex construction litigation and labor and employment law. She is a graduate of Belmont College of Law, where she coaches two undergraduate mock trial teams and teaches inaugural undergraduate trial advocacy classes.

13. The top minor league franchise in the country -

16. Adams and Reese launches HBCU practice -

Adams and Reese has launched an HBCU/MSI practice, providing support specifically tailored to institutions educating minority populations while expanding on its education practice and representation of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutes.

17. Clayton named president of Engel & Völkers -

Neal Clayton, CEO of Engel & Völkers Nashville, has announced the naming of John Clayton as president of the firm.

A native Nashvillian, John Clayton is a recipient of the Greater Nashville Realtors Association Life Member Gold Awards of Excellence from 2013-2017 and Diamond Elite in 2018 for transaction volume. He is a Leadership GNAR graduate, Sterling R RPAC major investor and past Greater Nashville Realtors Board of Director from 2015-2018.

18. Report: Multiple offers declining in Nashville -

Only one-third of homebuying offers written in the Nashville area in July encountered competition, down from 73% in July 2021, a new study from real estate brokerage Redfin reports.

Nationwide, 44.3% of home offers written by Redfin agents faced competition on a seasonally adjusted basis in July compared with a revised rate of 50.9% one month earlier and 63.8% one year earlier.

20. Napaway Coach to offer D.C.-Nashville service -

Napaway Coach, a new type of premium sleeper coach service designed to offer comfortable, convenient, overnight journeys between cities across the country, has revealed it will officially begin operations June 17 with service between Washington, D.C., and Nashville.

21. Nothing lifts the sale of a book like banning it -

If you’ve written a book, are writing a book now or are planning to write one, a word of advice: See if you can get it banned. It’s apparently good business.

The most recent example of this comes courtesy of the school board in McMinn County, which last month removed the Holocaust graphic novel “Maus” from its curriculum for eighth graders.
