1. Kroger, Albertsons defend merger plan -

Kroger and Albertsons defended their plan to merge – and tried to overcome the U.S. government’s objections – in a federal court hearing that began Monday in Oregon.

The two companies proposed what would be the largest supermarket merger in U.S. history in October 2022. They say joining together would help them rein in costs and better compete with big rivals like Walmart and Costco.

Former Davidson County prosecutor Zoe K. Sams has been named deputy director of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference. Most recently, she served as the director of legislation and Safe Baby Court statewide coordinator for the Tennessee Department of Children Services.

NASHVILLE (AP) — At 5 a.m. on a cold Sunday morning in Nashville, Tennessee, filmmaker Ken Burns climbed aboard a spacious, rumbling tour bus that that would become his home on wheels for the next four days, as well as a rolling advertisement for his upcoming PBS documentary "Country Music."

6. Tennessee museum donates record collection to university -

JOHNSON CITY (AP) — A Tennessee museum has donated more than 3,500 vinyl LPs and 1,200 78 rpm records to East Tennessee State University.

The donation was given to the Bluegrass, Old Time and Country Music Studies program in the university's Department of Appalachian Studies for preservation and study.

The last time I saw Johnny Cash he was dead. Peter Cooper – who just has released a book chronicling what he considers his greatest fortune, that he is able to spend his time with country music’s sometimes erratic geniuses – was standing next to me on that September 15, 2003.
