The decision Monday marks another court defeat for a series of new state laws passed to cut into Nashville's autonomy, extending to its international airport and pro sports facilities. The wave of restrictions followed a decision by local Nashville leaders to spike a proposal in 2022 to bring the 2024 Republican National Convention to Music City.

3. FAFSA deadline extended for TN Promise applicants -

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission announced the Free Application for Federal Student Aid deadline for the Tennessee Promise scholarship program will be extended to Friday, May 31.

The new deadline provides high school seniors and their families additional time to complete their FAFSA and remain eligible for the state’s tuition-free higher education program.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Nashville officials filed a lawsuit Wednesday challenging a new Tennessee law that reconfigures the panel overseeing professional sports facilities in the city by letting state leaders pick six of its 13 board members.

First things first: There are huge changes planned for this weekend’s third annual Big Machine Music City Grand Prix.

The three-day racing and music festival includes the first night race (Saturday’s SRO GT America at 8 p.m., available on IndyCar’s official YouTube channel) and an 11:30 a.m. green flag for Sunday’s 80-lap NTT IndyCar Series main event on NBC (WSMV-4 locally) on a 2.17-mile downtown circuit that stretches from Nissan Stadium’s parking lots across the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge and the Cumberland River.

18. Newgarden hot for IndyCar to race on hometown track, too -

Josef Newgarden, the two-time (and reigning) NTT IndyCar Series champion, is anxious to race again at what he considers his hometown track.

Newgarden, 29, went to high school in Hendersonville (Pope John Paul II) before moving to Indiana to pursue his open-wheel racing career, then moved to North Carolina when he joined Team Penske in order to be closer to company headquarters. When Newgarden and longtime girlfriend Ashley Welch got married in October, they decided to move back to Nashville.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — It will be a summer in the South for NASCAR: The stock car series announced Thursday it will stick to Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia, Florida and Alabama for June races — all of them without fans.

21. Penske buys Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IndyCar Series -

Roger Penske was a car-loving, 14-year-old who regularly listened to the Indianapolis 500 on the radio when his father landed tickets to the 1951 race. They made the trek from Cleveland, and when Penske saw the cars zipping around Indianapolis Motor Speedway at 200 mph he fell instantly in love.
