4. Tax credits, grants, other funding exists for preservationist efforts -

Looking to tap into tax credits, grants and other tools created for historic preservation and site sustainability? Here are some options at the local, state and federal level.

Knoxville

The city of Knoxville’s Dept. of Urban Design & Development operates the Historic Preservation Fund program. The program was established in 2014 and has contributed more than $2.7 million to projects that improve historic buildings. A list of sites funded from 2014 to 2020 can be found on the city website: Knoxvilletn.gov

5. The 2024 Nashville Nine: Can they be saved? -

Historic Nashville announced its 2024 Nashville Nine, a closely watched, annual list of neglected and endangered historic properties, Nov. 18. Since 2009 the list has included various landmarks, bridges, signs and neighborhoods in Nashville and Davidson County. Past preservation successes include “unmistakably Nashville” landmarks such as the Ryman Auditorium, Union Station, and the Hermitage Hotel, according to the organization. This year’s list also included 15 success stories from previous lists.

6. Helping history find a future -

One person’s ugly brick building is another’s portal to history. That empty lot? Sure, maybe something happened there 50 years ago, but now it could hold a condo complex or three.

These are some of the conversations as Tennessee cities tackle an increasingly dire housing shortage. Denser infill is seen as a way to help solve the problem because in-town, bigger lots, sometimes empty or with only one dwelling or structure, are natural targets.

7. Events -

Christmas Village. Christmas Village is one of the oldest charitable events in Nashville, supported and run entirely by volunteers from the Nashville Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club. Approximately 250 merchants and 30,000 shoppers from all over the United States participate in this consumer show. A variety of seasonal and gift items are offered, including toys for all ages, clothing for children and adults, jewelry, home decor, food items, pottery, collectibles and unusual pieces. Proceeds support Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center, patients recovering from traumatic brain injury at the Vanderbilt Pi Beta Phi Rehabilitation Institute and aspiring artists at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg. 8. Republican supermajority unchanged in Tennessee Statehouse but Democrats don't give up ground -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee's Republican legislative supermajority will remain unchanged after Democrats failed to flip seats in a handful of competitive races, but the minority party didn't give up any ground, either.

9. A presidential campaign unlike any other ends on Tuesday. Here's how we got here -

WASHINGTON (AP) — It's the election that no one could have foreseen.

Not so long ago, Donald Trump was marinating in anger at Mar-a-Lago after being impeached twice and voted out of the White House. Even some of his closest allies were looking forward to a future without the charismatic yet erratic billionaire leading the Republican Party, especially after his failed attempt to overturn an election ended in violence and shame. When Trump announced his comeback bid two years ago, the New York Post buried the article on page 26.

10. Surprise! Lower Fed rates did little for mortgage costs -

In mid-September, the country waited anxiously as Federal Reserve hinted it was flirting with a substantial reduction in interest rates.

Homebuyers, in particular, were excited as they would now be able to afford more house for the same monthly payment. Decisions were being postponed as rumors filled the air that the rate cut could be as high as a half percent.

11. Helene dumps 40 trillion gallons of water on South -

More than 40 trillion gallons of rain drenched the Southeast United States in the last week from Hurricane Helene and a run-of-the-mill rainstorm that sloshed in ahead of it – an unheard of amount of water that has stunned experts.

12. Voter registration deadline Oct. 7 -

The advent of October brings crucial dates for the upcoming Nov. 5 federal, state and county elections.

Deadline for completing voter registration is Monday, Oct. 7. Online registration for new voters can be completed through the Tennessee Secretary of State’s website.

13. Dodson Parker welcomes new associate Nelson   -

The Nashville law firm of Dodson Parker Behm & Capparella, PC, has hired Maddin M. Nelson as an associate attorney. She joins the firm’s employment and litigation practice groups.

Nelson previously practiced law in Denver, Colorado, specializing in business law and commercial litigation.

16. Great house with bizarre backstory changes hands -

The house at 714 Russell Street in the Historic Edgefield neighborhood in East Nashville sold Aug. 16 for $3.84 million. The property set the record for the highest sale in the area in November 2017 when it went for $2.35 million, which was a year and a-half after it sold for $868,000, a big number at that time.

18. Golden dreams for Paris -

On its own, a 17-day, all-expenses-paid birthday trip to Paris is a fabulous thing. That’s what Nashville sisters Gretchen and Alex Walsh won earlier this summer.

While in the City of Lights with family, friends and tens of thousands of other sightseers, the Walsh sisters hope to visit the Eiffel Tower and other famous tourist sites, enjoy a taste of French cuisine and go shopping for a few souvenirs.

Entrepreneur Exchange at Franklin Innovation Center. This monthly meetup at the Franklin Innovation Center, is the ultimate gathering for startups and entrepreneurs. 20. Hall recalls some some of Nashville’s highest-profile crimes -

Asked to reflect on some of the cases he was personally involved in, both major and minor, the first thing Nashville podcaster and 911 dispatcher Brandon Hall points out is that unlike the scripted podcasts he writes from start to finish, he doesn’t usually learn the final outcome of breaking incidents until much later.

22. All TN counties report sub-5% unemployment -

Tennessee set a record low for statewide unemployment in May when its seasonally adjusted rate dropped to 3% for the first time. The latest county unemployment data from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development showed continued low county unemployment across the state.

23. Analysis: Big spenders across the NHL made winners out of free agents across the league -

Brad Treliving kept hearing the message from agents he talked to at the start of NHL free agency.

"The cap's going up," the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager said. "They reminded me the cap was going up."

24. Supreme Court to take up gender-affirming care bans -

The Supreme Court Monday jumped into the fight over transgender rights, agreeing to hear an appeal from the Biden administration seeking to block state bans on gender-affirming care.

The justices’ action comes as Republican-led states have enacted a variety of restrictions on health care for transgender people, school sports participation, bathroom usage and drag shows. The administration and Democratic-led states have extended protections for transgender people, including a new federal regulation that seeks to protect transgender students.

25. Nashville home sellers give new meaning to empty nest -

When he was on the campaign trail for what became a successful run at mayor of Nashville, Freddie O’Connell announced that he would make an effort to keep Nashville residents from leaving. That statement seemed to run counter to reports from the Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitors Corporation that cited Nashville was adding scores of denizens each day – at one time 100 people and lately 87.

26. More rooftops, more people per acre -

Tennessee’s cities have a housing problem. Specifically, not enough rooftops, and certainly not enough that are affordable.

Elected officials at the state and local levels are trying different tactics to ease the crunch. But what’s the silver bullet? Zoning-density changes? Developer incentives?

27. Southern Baptists narrowly reject formal ban on churches with any women pastors -

31. New Nashville bars make Esquire list -

Two upscale Nashville bars that opened in 2023 have made this year’s version of Esquire magazine’s “Best Bars in America” list.

Tiger Bar on Gallatin Pike in East Nashville and Four Walls, located within The Joseph hotel downtown, made it onto the annual list of unique bars around the United States.

32. Buchalter welcomes real estate shareholder -

Bradley Siegal, who has expertise in real estate law, particularly in multifamily, retail, office, mixed-use and industrial sectors throughout the Southeastern United States, has joined Buchalter as shareholder.

33. Titans House stadium experience opening -

The Tennessee Titans are opening Titans House, the new Nissan Stadium experience center, for a limited number of appointments in May and will fully open to PSL holders and new Nissan Stadium waitlist members this summer.

34. A crime spree is headed to Nashville -

For bookworms – especially those with an appetite for mystery, thriller and suspense novels – the summer of 2024 will be a crime-time special unlike anything Nashville has seen.

Between the end of May and Labor Day weekend, three unique conventions with similar but very different target audiences will draw some 7,000 authors, readers and true-crime aficionados to Nashville, followed by Music City’s godfather of literary events, the Oct. 26-27 Southern Festival of Books, which annually attracts more than 150 authors and 25,000 passionate book lovers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Country star Cindy Walker will be posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, it was announced Thursday.

36. Oracle’s Ellison says Nashville to be new headquarters -

Oracle Corp.’s planned campus in Nashville will serve as the business software giant’s world headquarters, placing it in a city that’s a center for the U.S. health care industry, company chairperson Larry Ellison said.

37. O’Connell unveils transit plan details -

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell last week unveiled the details of his transportation improvement program, “Choose How You Move: An All-Access Pass to Sidewalks, Signals, Service and Safety,” which Nashville residents will vote on in November.

38. Franklin Farmers Market moving to new home -

Author Mandy Hale has this to say about change: “Change is painful, but nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you don’t belong.”

That pretty much sums up the conflicting feelings when it was announced almost a year and a half ago that the Franklin Farmers Market was being forced to move after more than 20 years in its spot behind The Factory in Franklin.

39. Tennessee State hires coach in big step to being the first HBCU to add ice hockey -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee State has taken its biggest step yet toward becoming the first historically Black college and university to introduce ice hockey by hiring Duanté Abercrombie as the Tigers' head coach.

40. TriStar seeks full-service hospital in Spring Hill -

TriStar Health has announced it plans to apply for a certificate of need with the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission to build a full-service, acute-care hospital in Spring Hill.

If approved, the $250 million community hospital would be built on the same site as the existing TriStar Spring Hill emergency room and will offer a wide range of services including:

41. Belmont announces $58M Curb College gift -

Belmont University has announced a $58 million lead gift from philanthropist and music industry icon Mike Curb and the Mike Curb Foundation to catalyze the expansion of its nationally renowned Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business.

42. Friendly rivalry hits 50 -

Five minutes is an eternity in popular music. Five years is a not-unheard-of higher education degree path. Now imagine having an impact on popular music through higher education for five decades.

Two area institutions – Belmont University and Middle Tennessee State University – are both in the midst of celebrating the 50th anniversaries of their music business programs, efforts that sought to fulfill educational and business needs then and serve to propel professionals into a rapidly changing industry now.

45. MTSU survey finds economic worries -

Tennessee consumers’ improved outlook last fall about their financial prospects dropped noticeably over the winter heading into the spring, though higher income earners are a bit more optimistic than others, the latest statewide survey by Middle Tennessee State University found.

46. O’Connell wants transit plan on Nov. ballot -

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell has announced he will move forward with a process to place dedicated funding for transportation and infrastructure projects on the November ballot.

After getting the green light on both legal and financial aspects of the process, the administration is putting a referendum in front of the voters Nov. 5.

There were 16% fewer home sales in the Nashville area in 2023 compared to 2022, statistics from The Greater Nashville Realtors, now led by newly elected president Kevin Wilson, reveal.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Country superstar Keith Urban and Kix Brooks of powerhouse country duo Brooks & Dunn will be inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame this year.

The organization announced its newest inductees on Thursday. They also include Casey Beathard and David Lee Murphy, in the contemporary songwriter category, and Rafe Van Hoy in the veteran songwriter category. They will be formally inducted on October 11 during the 53rd Anniversary Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala held at the Music City Center.

78. Southwood joins Neal & Harwell -

John Southwood, CPA, has joined Neal & Harwell, PLC, as director of financial operations.

Southwood most recently served as director of finance and accounting at Waller in Nashville the past 14 years. Before his time at Waller, Southwood served as chief financial officer at Boult, Cummings, Conners & Berry, PLC, 1996-2009, and then served as controller when the firm merged with the Bradley Arant Rose & White LLP firm based in Birmingham.

After another successful race this weekend at Nashville Superspeedway in nearby Lebanon, work continues in the hope of bringing NASCAR back to the area at one of the country's oldest, most historic tracks: Fairgrounds Speedway, within sight of downtown.

Voter registration for the Aug. 3 Metro Nashville/Davidson County general election ends Wednesday, July 5.

The election will determine Metro Nashville’s next mayor, vice-mayor and Metro Council members, along with the Tennessee House District 51 special primary election and Tennessee House District 52 special general election. If necessary, Metro runoff elections will take place Sept. 14.

Sheree Rose Kelley has been named chief executive officer of Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery.

Gov. One of the two Black Democrats who were expelled last week from the GOP-led Tennessee House was reinstated Monday after Nashville’s governing council voted to send him straight back to the Legislature.

Lawmakers last week confirmed Dwight Tarwater to serve on the state’s highest court starting this summer.

Tarwater will replace outgoing Justice Sharon Lee upon her retirement Aug. 31. Justice Lee announced in November that she would retire from the Tennessee Supreme Court after serving on the bench since 2008, when she was appointed by former Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen.
