1. Another young, failing QB? Say it ain’t so! -

Dear Will Levis, You told everyone that it wouldn’t happen again. Couldn’t happen again.

Yet here we are wondering why it happened again. Being too reckless and rattled with the football is no way to go through life as an NFL quarterback. The league is littered with physically talented guys like Carson Wentz, Zach Wilson and Trey Lance who simply didn’t cut it because of costly mistakes.

2. Pelosi warns in her new book that political threats and violence 'must stop' -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nancy Pelosi thought briefly she might have died on Jan. 6, 2021.

Not quite two years later, the threat of political violence would come for her husband at their home.

"Where's Nancy? Where's Nancy?"

3. Henry’s moving on to a better future; so are Titans -

Derrick Henry’s departure was inevitable. He said his goodbyes after leading the Titans past Jacksonville back in January when the regular season ended.

But when he signed Wednesday with the Baltimore Ravens, Titans fans surely hearkened back to the unpleasant memories of Steve McNair, Derrick Mason and Samari Rolle leaving Nashville to don the purple and black of one of Tennessee’s most bitter rivals.

4. Titans change game through free agency -

The Tennessee Titans’ long-anticipated signing of running back Tony Pollard on the first day of the so-called “legal tampering” period last week sent a clear signal.

Not only was Derrick Henry’s time as a Titan coming to an end – he agreed to a deal with Baltimore (you can hear Titans’ fans collective groan) a day later – but the Titans were truly moving in a different direction, as promised when Brian Callahan became head coach.

5. Henry, Tannehill get their storybook ending -

The storybook ending on the field, complete with running back Derrick Henry thanking fans for “the greatest eight years of my life,” was just the first sign that an era ended at Nissan Stadium Sunday.

6. Wycheck was more than just a player for Titans, community -

Frank Wycheck is forever etched in the annals of the Tennessee Titans history. Wycheck, 52, who died Saturday at his Chattanooga home, made his mark with the franchise in so many ways, though most remember him being the linchpin in the Jan. 8, 2000, Music City Miracle play, firing a cross-field lateral to Kevin Dyson for a 75-yard kickoff return with 16 seconds left in the AFC Wild-Card Playoff Game that gave Tennessee a 22-16 win and propelled the team to its only Super Bowl appearance to date.

7. Coaches, teammates like what still-green Levis offers -

School is in session for Will Levis. The rookie quarterback just completed his fifth NFL start and realizes there is still a lot for him to learn about playing the position at this level.

Even in his press conferences.

8. Bring back Henry at lower cost -

What do the Titans do about Derrick Henry? Since Mike Vrabel took over as head coach in 2018, Henry has been the focal point of his offense, highlighted by a 2,000-yard rushing season in 2020.

That has changed, slightly, this season as the Titans have phased in rookie Tyjae Spears when they can. But the Titans have been so far behind in games lately against Tampa Bay and Jacksonville that it hasn’t even allowed Henry to get on the field consistently because the Titans have to have to think pass first.

9. Nothing against Tannehill but starting Levis is right call -

Will Levis is far from a finished product, but he showed enough in his first two starts that the Titans should be encouraged about him as the quarterback of the future – and the present.

There is no denying Ryan Tannehill’s accomplishments for this franchise, taking over four years ago in midseason and guiding the Titans to one step from the Super Bowl.

10. Is Tannehill still the best answer at quarterback? -

The Titans chose in the offseason to try and make another go of it, adding a number of veteran free agents while riding Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry for one more go-around.

But with a poor showing in the opener, how long can the Titans afford to wait to see if that decision will pay dividends?

11. Tannehill playing for future with Titans -

In some ways, Ryan Tannehill spent a good part of the offseason twisting in the wind.

Sure, head coach Mike Vrabel said at the end of last season that Tannehill, if healthy, would be his starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans.

12. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill's ankle 'headed in right direction' -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Ryan Tannehill walked out wearing sneakers Wednesday to talk to reporters with no hint of a limp.

Then the Tennessee Titans quarterback spent the next few minutes sidestepping questions about his sprained right ankle just as he dodges pass rushers trying to take down Tannehill on the field.

13. Vrabel on run-heavy offense: ‘That is going to be the formula’ -

If you play fantasy football, you probably won’t be scouring the Tennessee Titans roster for much help beyond the obvious choice with Derrick Henry.

This season, without wide receiver A.J. Brown, the Titans just don’t offer a lot in terms of explosiveness and high-scoring games. In fact, the most points the Titans have tallied in a game all season is 24 (done twice).

14. Tannehill toughness shows in consecutive start streak -

When Ryan Tannehill’s scheduled start Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts will mark a milestone of sorts.

Tannehill, who took over six games into the 2019 season, will be making his 49th consecutive regular-season start since taking the reins from Marcus Mariota after the Titans began 2-4 that season.

15. Titans QB Tannehill has 'burning fire' after playoff loss -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The questions came at Ryan Tannehill in a variety of ways Wednesday, with reporters trying to draw out any remaining emotion from the Tennessee Titans quarterback's last game.

The man starting his 11th NFL season on Sunday in the opener against the visiting New York Giants didn't bite.

16. Replacing Tannehill won’t be easy -

The offseason has already begun for the Tennessee Titans, and with it comes plenty of questions that must be answered in the coming months.

One that won’t have to be answered concerns the quarterback position. General manager Jon Robinson, head coach Mike Vrabel and anyone who has any authority on the matter has said that Ryan Tannehill will be the Titans quarterback in 2022.

17. Titans adding Phillips, Fisher, former GM to ring of honor -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Bum Phillips, Jeff Fisher and former general manager Floyd Reese will be the newest members of the Tennessee Titans' ring of honor.

18. Titans have never reached these heights on offense -

The Tennessee Titans offense we have seen under Arthur Smith and Ryan Tannehill is unlike almost anything we have ever seen from this franchise.

For most of the two-plus decades the team has been on Tennessee soil, the Titans’ calling card has been defense. Keep the game close, let the defense keep you in it and then, maybe, kick a field goal at the end to win.

19. Tannehill leans on faith, family in unstable NFL -

Ryan Tannehill’s emergence as Tennessee’s starting quarterback sort of came out of left field from the Titans’ perspective.

When he replaced Marcus Mariota six weeks into the season, no one could have expected the results that Tannehill has produced.

20. Looks like Aloha for Mariota -

With 10 games left in his season of reckoning, Marcus Mariota’s fate with the Tennessee Titans appears to be sealed.

Mariota’s benching in Sunday’s shutout loss to Denver may very well have answered the question that has lingered throughout last season, the offseason and the early part of this season. He is not the Titans quarterback of the future – and may not even be the quarterback of the present.

21. Alcorn State to retire Steve McNair's No. 9 jersey -

LORMAN, Miss. (AP) — Alcorn State University says it will officially retire the No. 9 jersey worn by former quarterback Steve McNair later this season.

22. Brissett spoils Titans' opener, rallying Colts to 19-17 win -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Colts keep changing quarterbacks, not that it matters when they play the Titans.

Jacoby Brissett became the latest Indianapolis quarterback to top Tennessee, throwing a 4-yard touchdown pass to T.Y. Hilton with 4:38 left to lead the Colts to a 19-17 victory Sunday in the Titans' home opener.

23. George challenges Titans to seize moment as team honors past -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are honoring their past by retiring the Nos. 27 and 9 of Eddie George and the late Steve McNair.

24. Titans remember past champs, face old nemesis -

The Titans stunned the Cleveland Browns in the season opener and now return home on a day that will be special even before the ball is kicked off against the visiting Indianapolis Colts.

That’s because the jersey numbers of Eddie George and Steve McNair will be retired Sunday at Nissan Stadium.

25. Titans face years of rebuilding if Mariota falters -

Even before training camp starts this week, the question of whether Marcus Mariota is the Tennessee Titans’ long-term answer at quarterback has been examined ad nauseam on talk radio, internet blogs and social media.

26. Titans retiring numbers of Eddie George, late Steve McNair -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk says nobody with the Titans will ever wear Eddie George's No. 27 nor the No. 9 of the late Steve McNair again, players who helped the franchise through its difficult relocation from Houston to Tennessee to its lone Super Bowl berth.

27. Titans need to pursue Steelers’ WR Brown -

Wanted: One dynamic, transformational type player who regularly affects the outcome of games. After watching the NFL playoffs unfold, it’s obvious the key to winning championships is having game-changing players in skill positions, preferably on the offensive side of the football.

28. Mariota’s future more like McNair or Locker? -

The Tennessee Titans head into an offseason full of questions after Sunday night’s elimination loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Chief among those concerns is quarterback Marcus Mariota, whose absence Sunday night did nothing to clarify whether he will continue as the face of the franchise.

29. The story behind the podcast -

During the summer of 2017, Sports Illustrated NFL writer Tim Rohan was assigned to write an in-depth story looking back at the 2009 murder of former Titans star Steve McNair by SI true-crime editor Adam Duerson. At some point, he mentioned the story to Peter King, the NFL writer who left SI in May.

30. Podcast vs police -

It had all the elements of a Hollywood script or a best-selling whodunit, but the shocking 2009 Fourth of July murder of legendary Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair was – horribly – all too real.

31. Ravens-Titans game stirs memories of a great rivalry gone cold -

Anytime the Baltimore Ravens appear on the Tennessee Titans’ schedule, the rivalry that once was comes back to mind.

Bitter as it often was for the Titans, who lost not once, but twice, to Baltimore as the No. 1 playoff seed, the Ravens made for the perfect adversary in the early days of the franchise’s tenure in Tennessee.

32. Top Middle Tennessee residential sales for April 2018 -

Top residential real estate sales, April 2018, for Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson and Sumner counties, as compiled by Chandler Reports.

33. Deford Bailey’s legacy shines on in grandson -

Using the shoe polish-stained, time-worn shine box his grandfather made in 1914, the Music City Shoe Shine Man works a sheen from the “Pink Elephant” auto lot exec’s shoes.

“You see, first I prep them – get them cleaned up so that the dirt on them isn’t polished right back into them. Then I apply the first coat of polish,” Carlos DeFord Bailey says. “And then I give them a spit shine.”

34. He's back -

About a month ago, following a Dec. 10 loss at Arizona, Marcus Mariota showed a seldom-seen side of his personality.

Clearly dejected, he seemed flustered and distraught while answering questions in his post-game press conference, even answering that he was “pissed off” about his performance when asked why he seemed more bothered than usual following the Titans’ 12-7 loss to the struggling Cardinals.

35. Titans QB Marcus Mariota's status still unclear vs. Miami -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee Titans coach Mike Mularkey says quarterback Marcus Mariota's status is still unclear for their upcoming matchup with the Miami Dolphins.

The Titans coach remains hopeful that Mariota will play despite a strained hamstring .

36. Titans QB Marcus Mariota day to day with strained hamstring -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have seen Marcus Mariota be a pretty quick healer, and that's what they're hoping for from their quarterback who's dealing with a strained hamstring.

Coach Mike Mularkey said Monday that Mariota is day to day after an MRI showed a strain. Mularkey compared the injury to running back DeMarco Murray's recent hamstring injury, which kept the Pro Bowler out of a couple practices but not a game.

37. Trump vows to cut taxes 'tremendously' for middle class -

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump vowed to deliver on a major tax cut for middle-class Americans on Tuesday as the White House and congressional leaders prepared to release details on a tax overhaul proposal that would slash the corporate rate and simplify the nation's tax code.

38. Receiver-rich Titans now surprisingly thin -

For most of their two decades in Tennessee, the wide receiver position has been a glaring hole for the Titans.

Other than the years when Derrick Mason and Drew Bennett were among Steve McNair’s primary targets, and an occasional quality free agent signing like Nate Washington, there have been many swings and misses when it comes to the Titans and the wide receiver position.

39. Year 3: Time for Mariota to become a star -

If Year 1 was a good start and Year 2 was another step in the right direction, what should we expect of Marcus Mariota in Year 3?

How about a playoff berth for the team he quarterbacks.

Granted, there are many other factors in play that will determine the success, failure or return to mediocrity of the Titans in 2017. Has the defensive backfield been successfully retooled? Can the offensive line remain one of the best in the NFL? Will the additions at wide receiver pay the expected dividends?

40. Titans poised to break free of weak AFC South -

When Marcus Mariota participated on the first day of the Titans’ recent organized team activities – OTAs for you hard-core NFL fans – it sent two messages to the rest of the AFC South:

41. ‘Good locker room’ doesn’t happen by accident -

The first time I heard the term “good locker room” in relation to an NFL team, I figured it had something to do with TVs, air conditioning and nearby shower accommodations.

As usual, I was wrong.

42. Former GM Reese: Titans on track to match early success -

Are the Tennessee Titans on the verge of a breakthrough? It seemed as much over the second half of the 2016 season – the meltdown at Jacksonville notwithstanding.

But a man who knows something about building the Titans says the current edition is on the right track under the guidance of General Manager Jon Robinson and Head Coach Mike Mularkey.

43. ‘It’ factor continues to elude Mariota in second season -

By the time many of you read this, Marcus Mariota might have already torched the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Or he might not. Such is life dealing with the trials and tribulations of breaking in a young quarterback.

44. Will this young quarterback ever be a success? -

In his first 16 NFL starts, the jury is out on the quarterback. Is he destined to be the cornerstone of the franchise or just another first-round draft pick who ultimately will fade away?

He struggles to complete passes downfield. He throws too many interceptions. He keeps fumbling. Sometimes it appears his biggest strength is running the ball, not throwing it.

45. Will we one day look at Lions win as turning point? -

Was Sunday’s stunning victory in Detroit the start of a turning point for the Tennessee Titans?

For a team that has just six wins since 2013, erasing a 12-point deficit on the road was certainly a sign of hope for a franchise that has experienced virtually nothing but despair for the several years now.

46. 8-8 mediocrity sounds good to many Titans fans -

On an August morning in 1999, the Tennessee Titans coaching staff and front office personnel awoke to this headline in the local newspaper:

Playoffs or Pink Slips.

It got their attention. Things were quite tense before, during and after practice on that particular day.

47. Titans have a fresh face on preseason roster: Hope -

Hope is what Tennessee Titans have to offer their fans when training camp officially opens on Saturday.

That hope is not to be confused with Super Bowl expectations. It is an optimism that things are finally headed in the right direction after several years of fluctuating between mediocrity and bottom-of-the-NFL barrel horrible.

48. Finding opportunity in coaching, player moves -

The Tennessee Titans have completed the season with a 3-13 record and have guaranteed themselves the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

In the first four games of the season, most sports pundits felt the team was much improved over the previous year as the team had annihilated Tampa Bay and lost games to Cleveland, Indianapolis and Buffalo that could have been wins.

49. No need to risk putting Mariota in more danger -

The Tennessee Titans are holding out hope that Marcus Mariota’s right knee injury, sustained in Sunday’s loss to the Patriots, won’t be season-ending.

Titans interim coach Mike Mularkey made it a point at his Monday press conference to refute several national reports that said the rookie quarterback would definitely be out for the final two games of the season.

50. Rotten to the core: Titans fail to develop talent -

As the Tennessee Titans sink toward the end of another lackluster season, they head into the off-season with still more holes to fill for 2016.

Some of that, of course, is inevitable with any team as an NFL roster. Even on the best teams can have a 20 percent roster turnover in the off-season due to injuries, free agency and new draft picks coming on board.

51. Key developments since death of Titans owner Bud Adams -

In the 26 months since the death of Tennessee Titans founder Kenneth S. “Bud” Adams, the franchise has been in a constant state of transition. Here’s a timeline of the biggest changes:

52. Better Titans doing nothing for Whisenhunt’s record -

The whispers are already out there. How much job security does Ken Whisenhunt really have with the Tennessee Titans?

It seems a little soon for message boards and talk radio to be discussing the ouster of the Titans coach, but such is life in the coaching fish bowl when you lose games that should go into the win column, like the Titans have done in their past two games.

53. Big Nissan homecoming for Middle Tennessee Vols -

Tennessee defensive end Derek Barnett won’t be in a strange place Saturday when he walks into Nissan Stadium in Nashville for the 2015 season opener against Bowling Green.

In fact, the former Brentwood Academy standout has a special place in his heart for Nissan Stadium, having attended Tennessee Titans games there for years.

54. Big band, big stadium, big deal -

Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed our name. Well, hell, Mick, if it’s puzzling you, it’s Nashville. Music City USA.

We’re the national media’s flavor of the day – the “It city,” which has gone from being a secondary concert market – remember The Beatles played Memphis, not Nashville – to one of the country’s prime touring destinations.

55. 20 years later, franchise again at rock bottom -

The lockers have been cleaned out, the shoulder pads and helmets taken up to be cleaned and stored.

But the stench of the worst season for the Tennessee Titans franchise since 1994 still remained after the season wrapped up with a 2-14 mark.

56. It’s bad now, but the future looks worse for the aging Titans -

If the Tennessee Titans want to find a blueprint for fixing the mess this franchise has become, perhaps they should study the team that’s coming to LP Field this Sunday.

What, you say?

57. Top Middle Tennessee residential real estate transactions August 2014 -

58. Titans offense finally looking like an NFL product -

Exciting. Now, there’s a word that hasn’t been associated much with the Tennessee Titans in recent years.

But based on the early preseason, Coach Ken Whisenhunt is fielding a Titans team that might actually be worth watching.

59. Top Middle Tennessee residential real estate transaction for first half of 2014 -

January through June 2014 residential real estate transactions of $500,000 or more for Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson and Sumner counties, as compiled by Chandler Reports.

60. Top Middle Tennessee residential real estate transaction for June 2014 -

61. Finally! Titans build for future through the draft -

OK, admit it. There were a bunch of you scratching your heads after the Titans drafted Taylor Lewan with the 11th overall pick in the NFL Draft.

And there were some of you who were clamoring for the Titans to gamble on Johnny Football with that pick, simply for the fact that the Titans could add some sizzle to a franchise that’s been on a low flame for the past five years.

62. Seafood, memories at McNair’s old Jefferson Street restaurant -

Jamal Britton hoists Alaskan king crab legs from steamer to Styrofoam to-go box. Without hesitation, he turns to grilling fish filets as he attempts to satisfy the steady flow of folks ducking beneath the almost-invisible scrawled memorial to Steve McNair.

63. Former Titan Sanders offers support for gay player -

The decision last week by former University of Missouri linebacker Michael Sam to reveal himself as, potentially, the first openly gay player to play in the NFL created plenty of conversation and provoked plenty of emotion.

64. Top Midstate residential real estate transactions for 2013 -

Top 2013 residential real estate transactions for Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson and Sumner counties, as compiled by Chandler Reports.

65. Have Titans ever had a legitimate difference maker? -

In looking at where the Tennessee Titans franchise has gotten off the tracks, it is easy to point fingers at a variety of possible culprits.

There are those who have questioned the coaching of Mike Munchak and his staff, others would lay the blame at the feet of players who have underperformed and still others would point to the front office’s inability to provide stability in the draft and free agency.

66. Like 2001 with McNair, it’s time to give the Titans' offense to Locker -

Back in 2001, the Tennessee Titans were struggling to run the football. They had lost three games in a row and were looking for solutions.

At the time, the Titans’ bread and butter was to pound the football with a strong offensive line and the power rushing of Eddie George. Only that wasn’t working, and Tennessee began the year 0-3 after posting the league’s best record the season before at 13-3.

67. Titans' best seasons featured emergency QB changes -

Jake Locker’s sprained hip certainly puts a damper on the encouraging developments he’s shown the past two weeks.

Beginning the week before with his 94-yard game-winning drive to beat San Diego, and continuing Sunday with three touchdown passes against the New York Jets, Locker had even the most skeptical of Titans fans believing he had turned the corner and was showing signs of becoming a quality NFL quarterback.

68. Like 'Dare McNair' before, foes will ‘Make Jake,’ Titans win with arm -

Once upon a time the Tennessee Titans were regarded as a reasonably talented team that could only go as far as a young and erratic quarterback could take them.

This quarterback had more than his share of doubters and naysayers, many of whom said he couldn’t hit the side of a barn throwing from the pocket, and that his only skills were rolling out and having the option to throw on the run or tuck it and scramble.

69. Amid 8th Avenue change, a smokey, dark, underground oasis -

Kevin Wright slices limes for the promised ice-cold tequila shots – “We serve all kinds of liquor and beer,” he says – as another day gets underway in the literal foundation from which is springing a “new” strip of mixed retail and residential development in Melrose.

70. Top Midstate residential real estate transactions for February 2013 -

Top February 2013 residential real estate transactions for Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson and Sumner counties, as compiled by Chandler Reports.

71. O’Donnell: Stick with Hasselbeck -

Matt Hasselbeck can read a defense with the best of them. He proved that with his game-winning touchdown toss to Nate Washington against the Buffalo Bills.

He also can read an impending quarterback controversy and is doing his best to steer clear of igniting any unneeded dissention within the Tennessee Titans locker room.

72. Waiting, watching no longer an option for NFL's young quarterbacks -

When Titans coach Mike Munchak tabbed Locker as his starting quarterback for the 2012 season, it opened a new chapter in the franchise’s history.

For many the question was not why Locker, but why now. For Munchak, the answer is why not.

73. Rookie McCarthy stakes claim at linebacker -

OK, I realize heaping praise on any rookie is always dangerous territory.

Five years ago, the Tennessee Titans thought the quarterback position was solved and in good hands for years to come with Vince Young earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. And we all saw how that imploded.

74. Please be patient; Locker’s time will come -

When it comes to Jake Locker, Titans fans must feel like kids who are just a few days away from Christmas.

They spot a big box in the corner with their name on it, one that won’t quite fit under the tree with the rest of the presents.

75. Healthy choices -

With a nod and a bright smile, Chandlér Bradley, 63, glances up from the cashier’s table at The Nashville Mobile Market.

“This is good,” he says of the portable business that on this day has rolled into the courtyard in the shadows of Gernert public housing development – the high rise and cottages at 12th Avenue South and Edgehill – in the heart of the city’s food desert.
