1. Westbrook-Ikhine is always lurking -

When Nick Westbrook-Ikhine first made the Tennessee Titans roster as an undrafted rookie back in 2020, he knew his primary role would be on special teams and specifically as a gunner on punts.

And while Westbrook-Ikhine has had the occasional big game as a receiver during his first four seasons with the Titans, the team’s plan each offseason was always to add talent at the position and maneuver Westbrook-Ikhine back down the depth chart.

2. A whole new game for the Tennessee Titans -

Anxious Titans fans will finally get to see their new-look team in a meaningful game Sunday against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. It’ll also be the first time some of the Titans own players will see their team play. And that’s a concern.

3. Speed, skill and depth at wide receiver? The Titans? -

The Tennessee Titans spent a good part of the offseason upgrading their wide receiver corps to give quarterback Will Levis his best chance to succeed.

Joining holdover DeAndre Hopkins were free agents Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd. When healthy, those three figure to be atop the depth chart and getting the lion’s share of the reps in Coach Brian Callahan’s offense, which often that will feature three wide receivers on the field at once.

4. Seahawks wrap joint practices getting best of the Titans' injury-limited offense -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Former Seattle defensive backs Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams did a lot of talking Thursday.

Current Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon had the last word with an interception of Will Levis as Tennessee started a two-minute drill, and he punctuated his second pick of the day by running to give the ball to Adams who's now with the Tennessee Titans.

5. Titans rookie JC Latham being counted on as key part of rebuilt offensive line -

NASHVILLE (AP) — JC Latham is being counted upon to be one of the key parts of the Tennessee Titans rebuilt offensive line this upcoming season.

After allowing 64 sacks last season, the Titans drafted Latham No. 7 overall, and he is one of four new starters on the Tennessee line, making the switch from right tackle in college to left tackle in the NFL.

6. Top storylines as Titans open camp -

Training camp opened Wednesday for the Tennessee Titans, and it will be interesting to see how a number of things unfold.

Here are the four biggest storylines as the Titans go through training camp and preseason.

7. A failure years in the making -

The so-called “competitive rebuild” the Tennessee Titans were aiming for in 2023 completely missed the mark.

The collaboration between head coach Mike Vrabel and general manager Ran Carthon that owner Amy Adams Strunk mandated when she brought Carthon on board to replace the fired Jon Robinson had a few hits in the draft and free agency, but not nearly enough for the Titans to remain on the cusp of contention.

8. Titans fire special teams coordinator after punter's season-ending injury -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel has fired special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman after the Titans had a punt blocked and returned for a touchdown followed by the punter suffering a season-ending injury on his next punt attempt.

9. Coaches, teammates like what still-green Levis offers -

School is in session for Will Levis. The rookie quarterback just completed his fifth NFL start and realizes there is still a lot for him to learn about playing the position at this level.

Even in his press conferences.

10. Titans have massive rebuild ahead at nearly all positions -

Ran Carthon, you are officially on the clock. Yes, it’s understood that you were hired to work in better collaboration with Mike Vrabel than Jon Robinson did. But with a projected $100 million of cap space to work with and very few building blocks on the roster, a much-needed rebuild needs to begin ASAP.

11. Titans running out of time to salvage season because of road woes -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are running out of time to salvage this season.

The Titans (3-6) have lost two straight and four of five after a 20-6 loss in Tampa Bay. They haven't won on the road since Nov. 17, 2022, making Tennessee the AFC's lone winless team away from home at 0-5. Arizona is the NFL's only other team still looking for a road win.

12. Tannehill remains Titans starting QB with bye week giving him time to heal -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans believe they got lucky with the timing of quarterback Ryan Tannehill spraining his right ankle in London occurring right before their bye week.

Tannehill left London on crutches after hurting the same right ankle that cost him a combined five games at the end of last season. Malik Willis was sacked on four of five pass attempts in the Titans' 24-16 loss to Baltimore.

13. Titans now have options with 2 offensive linemen returning to practice -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Nicholas Petit-Frere is just happy to be back at practice with his six-game suspension for gambling reduced by two games.

Peter Skoronski has been busy downing shakes and smoothies to add weight in recovering from an appendectomy.

14. Afterthoughts help make up for recent draft deficiencies -

Some of it is probably a result of poor drafts in recent years. Some of it seems to be that Mike Vrabel doesn’t mind a good underdog story.

Whatever the reason, the Titans have 13 players (including two currently on injured reserve) in various roles from starters to key backups who were undrafted, signed and developed into role players and contributors.

15. Derrick Henry reminds Titans why he matters as offense posts best game of season -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have a lot of new players this season.

However, Derrick Henry remains the biggest constant for an offense that works best when he runs the ball.

16. Jackson grabs opportunity in returner role -

Sometimes opportunities open up and guys like Kearis Jackson take advantage of them.

The Titans probably went into the 2023 season figuring that Kyle Philips would be their punt returner, and that perhaps Hassan Haskins would retain the kickoff return role.

17. Titans' Derrick Henry ready to remind everyone what running backs mean to NFL -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Derrick Henry, who has run for more yards than anyone else since the start of the 2016 NFL season, seems like a man on a mission.

18. Titans will sink or swim with offensive line -

It has taken a while, but the Tennessee Titans have rebuilt their offense for 2023.

Adding the likes of veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and rookie running back Tyjae Spears, and hoped-for improvement from Treylon Burks and Kyle Philips, once they return from injuries, should make for a better showing from the offense than we saw in 2022.

19. Tennessee's joint practices canceled after injury to Patriots cornerback Bolden -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans will focus on themselves during the final week of training camp after the New England Patriots canceled their two joint practices following the injury to cornerback Isaiah Bolden.

20. Titans drafting another QB deja vu for vet Ryan Tannehill -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The final year of his current NFL contract is not a topic Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill will discuss.

Yes the quarterback who turns 35 in July noticed the Titans drafted a quarterback for a second straight year. This time, the franchise traded up to No. 33 to take Kentucky's Will Levis, its highest selection used at quarterback since taking the man Tannehill replaced at No. 2 overall in 2015.

21. Titans didn’t get immediate help they needed -

The Tennessee Titans needed to find two to three plug-and-play starters in the 2023 NFL Draft to shore up the roster for the coming season.

But when the draft – new general manager Ran Carthon’s first – was over, the Titans had fallen far short of that goal.

22. Titans need to tweak offense to ease load on Henry, defense -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans must work through some offensive issues to relieve the pressure on both two-time NFL rushing champ Derrick Henry and one of the league's stingiest defenses.

23. How good are the Titans? -

As the Tennessee Titans are just past the midway point of the season, it’s a good time to reflect on where the franchise currently stands.

The Titans’ 6-3 record before the Green Bay game has them firmly in the driver’s seat in the AFC South, having already dispatched the Colts twice, squeaking by the Texans in Houston, and while both Jaguars games are still upcoming, the Jags are being the Jags.

24. Titans sit atop AFC South again despite struggles, injuries -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have a stingy defense and two-time NFL rushing champ Derrick Henry on his way toward leading the league for the third time in four seasons.

25. Titans again pound opponents with Derrick Henry, defense -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have two-time rushing champ Derrick Henry and a punishing defense, so the two-time AFC South division winners are leaning into their strengths right now.

26. Titans place rookie WR Kyle Philips on IR, sign Chris Conley -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee's banged-up wide receiver group is getting even thinner with the Titans placing rookie Kyle Philips on injured reserve and signing Chris Conley off Kansas City's practice squad Tuesday as a replacement.

27. How to steal 1st down without catch -

Long-held pigskin wisdom says three things can happen when you throw the football – completion, incompletion or interception.

But in the pass-happy world of today’s NFL, defensive penalties are an increasingly frequent fourth option, moving the chains in the same manner as a deep pass or big catch-and-run.

28. Titans coach Vrabel doubling down after 0-2 start, rout -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel has two-time NFL rushing champ Derrick Henry, and the reigning AP NFL Coach of the Year is doubling down.

Yes, despite the Titans' first 0-2 start in a decade and coming off the ugliest loss of his tenure in a 41-7 loss to Buffalo on Monday night.

29. Titans CB Fulton, RB Hilliard out for Week 2 vs. Bills -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans ruled starting cornerback Kristian Fulton and running back Dontrell Hilliard out for Monday night's game in Buffalo because of hamstring injuries.

Neither player practiced all week. Reserve guard Jamarco Jones also was ruled out after missing practice Friday and Saturday because of an elbow injury.

30. Remember the Titans: Bills haven't forgotten loss last year -

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills quarterback Josh Allen feigned ignorance when asked if he winced while watching video of him getting stuffed on fourth down near the goal line in the final seconds of a loss to Tennessee last year.

31. Titans' rookies lead group effort to help replace A.J. Brown -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee's best wide receiver the past three seasons now plays in Philadelphia, and the Titans turned to a group approach to help replace A.J. Brown at least in their season opener.

32. Titans back themselves against wall with 5 of next 7 on road -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee's opening schedule looked daunting from the moment the NFL released a slate sending the Titans on the road for five of their first eight games.

Dropping their season opener at home?

33. Titans blow 13-point lead, then miss potential winning FG -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans started exactly the way they wanted, jumping out to a double-digit lead.

Finishing was the issue.

The Titans blew a 13-point lead Sunday, then drove down the field to set up Randy Bullock for a 47-yard field goal to beat the New York Giants. The kicker on his sixth NFL team yanked the game-winning attempt wide left to turn a season-opening win into a 21-20 loss.

34. Giants at Titans: What to watch -

It is finally time for the NFL regular season, and there are still plenty of questions to be answered as the Titans open the 2022 season against the New York Giants at Nissan Stadium. Let’s look at some of those and how they could come into play against the Giants.

35. Rookie Phillips making name for himself as receiver, punt returner -

While Treylon Burks has gotten the attention that naturally comes as a first-round pick, another Titans rookie receiver has been a big hit in training camp and preseason.

Kyle Philips, a fifth-round pick from UCLA, comes to Tennessee as a ready-made slot receiver and punt returner, something the team has needed for a while in a league where quick, shifty receivers who can get open seem to find a niche.

36. Vrabel ‘encouraged’ by progress of top-pick Burks at WR -

First-round NFL draft picks face plenty of scrutiny. When the previous two first-round picks for four team – in this case the Tennessee Titans – (offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson in 2020, cornerback Caleb Farley in 2021) didn’t contribute much in their rookie seasons, it adds even more attention.

37. Titans unwilling to force ball to Burks in preseason -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Finding Treylon Burks through two games is more a case of Where's Waldo with the preseason numbers for the Tennessee Titans' first-round pick downright anemic.

Burks has exactly one catch for four yards with a combined four targets this preseason. Because Burks was drafted at No. 18 overall with the selection acquired in the trade sending wide receiver A.J. Brown to Philadelphia, it's very easy to panic after the rookie missed much of the offseason program dealing with asthma and conditioning issues.

38. Top of 2022 draft class ready to contribute -

After draft classes that have not shown success collectively the past couple of seasons, the Titans came into 2022 needing their selections to make some immediate contributions if they are to fill holes and remain an AFC contender.

39. Titans start camp with concerns on offense -

Training camp has opened for the Tennessee Titans for 2022, and this year’s version of the team has seemingly flipped the script regarding issues facing the squad.

A year ago, the Titans entered training camp with an offense that featured Ryan Tannehill coming off a second consecutive outstanding season and quarterbacking an offense that featured 2,000-yard rusher Derrick Henry, 1,000-yard receiver A.J. Brown and the just-added future Hall of Fame receiver Julio Jones.

40. Questions answered, unanswered as Titans wrap offseason -

The offseason work is in the books for the Tennessee Titans.

Installations have been made for both the offensive and defensive systems. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has been working to develop chemistry with his new receivers, and rookies and other newcomers are working to get more comfortable, so they can be ready to go once training camp opens July 26.

41. Tannehill building chemistry with his new Titans' playmakers -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Ryan Tannehill's favorite receiver since becoming the Tennessee Titans' starting quarterback now plays in Philadelphia.

Luckily, the Titans got Tannehill a lot of new teammates to work with, and he's busy working this offseason to create chemistry and timing with all the new wide receivers and tight ends.

42. Titans agree to deal with tight end Okonkwo -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms on a multi-year contract with tight end Chig Okonkwo on Monday.

Okonkwo, a fourth-round selection in the draft, had 77 receptions for 717 yards and eight touchdowns in three seasons at the University of Maryland. In his final year for the Terps, he had 52 receptions for 447 yards and five touchdowns. The 52 receptions were the second most in school history by a Maryland tight end. Frank Wycheck had 58.

43. Titans agree to deal with third-round pick Petit-Frere -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with third-round pick Nicholas Petit-Frere on Thursday.

Petit-Frere, an offensive tackle, played 35 games, including 20 starts for Ohio State.

44. Titans agree to terms on deals with 4 of their 9 draft picks -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms on multi-year contracts with four of their nine draft picks.

The Titans announced Thursday they have deals with running back Hassan Haskins, wide receiver Kyle Philips, safety Theo Jackson and linebacker Chance Campbell.
