3. A Vol and a Dawg promote milk ahead of a big game -

As NIL deals go, this one is sweet milk money. Ahead of Saturday’s Neyland Stadium showdown between No. 21 Tennessee and top-ranked Georgia, Vols quarterback Joe Milton and Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey teamed up for a series of “Milk Bowl” commercials for The Dairy Alliance, a nonprofit organization funded by dairy farmers in Tennessee and Georgia. The campaign was put together by Everett Sports Management.

4. Vrabel promises his Titans won't quit despite being 2-4 at bye -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Even with all the offseason changes, the Tennessee Titans have reached their bye where they left off last season.

Losing.

The Titans (2-4) have lost two straight and 11 of 13 dating to last season. Veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill couldn't finish the last game, a 24-16 loss to Baltimore in London. He has a sprained right ankle similar to the injury that cost him two starts last season.

5. One more shot for Titans stars before rebuild? -

The seven-game losing streak that capped off the Tennessee Titans’ 2022 season and subsequent offseason activity also generated frequent use of a word NFL teams don’t like to hear: rebuild.

6. QB Dobbs returning to Browns as Watson's backup -

CLEVELAND (AP) — Joshua Dobbs is back with the Browns as a backup.

The free agent quarterback, who spent most of last season with Cleveland, agreed Monday to a one-year contract and will be the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Deshaun Watson next season.

7. Dobbs 'proud of effort' despite costly turnovers vs Jaguars -

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — All Joshua Dobbs had to do was protect the football.

He failed miserably.

The journeyman quarterback who was signed off Detroit's practice squad just a few weeks ago turned the ball over twice in the second half Saturday night, handing Jacksonville 10 points in a 20-16 loss that could haunt the Tennessee Titans for the next eight months.

8. Titans QB Dobbs excited to start with AFC South on the line -

Joshua Dobbs has been a part of an NFL playoff team in his six-year career.

Now the journeyman quarterback has the opportunity of a lifetime with his fifth different team — and third this season.

9. Vrabel plays no games: Titans starting Dobbs at QB vs Jags -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Quarterback Joshua Dobbs will make a second straight start Saturday night in Jacksonville with the Titans' playoff hopes on the line despite being signed Dec. 21 off Detroit's practice squad.

10. Forget Titans' 6-game skid: AFC South title on line vs. Jags -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Go ahead and forget Tennessee's six-game skid, the franchise's longest since Ken Whisenhunt lost his head coaching job seven games into his second season in 2015.

Only one game matters now for the Titans.

11. Prescott has 2 TD passes, Cowboys top banged-up Titans 27-13 -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys know they have some things to clean up. Starting a two-game road swing to wrap up the regular season with a victory is all that matters.

Prescott threw for 282 yards and two touchdowns to Dalton Schultz and the Cowboys beat the banged-up and resting Tennessee Titans 27-13 on Thursday night for their sixth win in seven games.

12. Dobbs or Willis? Titans must pick QB to help win AFC South -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans face a very big decision with the AFC South title up for grabs in the regular-season finale in Jacksonville.

Start Joshua Dobbs? Or go back to rookie Malik Willis?

13. Titans to start Dobbs, not Willis at QB vs. Dallas -

NASHVILLE (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says that the Tennessee Titans will start Joshua Dobbs at quarterback Thursday night against the Dallas Cowboys instead of rookie Malik Willis.

14. Titans will try to end skid, stay atop AFC South with Willis -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are not used to losing, not with the NFL's second-longest active winning streak at six straight seasons.

Nobody even remains on this roster from the previous time the Titans lost four straight.

15. Titans' Tannehill out vs. Texans, rookie QB Willis to start -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee rookie Malik Willis will start his third NFL game Saturday against the Houston Texans with veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill ruled out with an injured right ankle.

16. Titans sign Dobbs with Tannehill nursing sprained ankle -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee rookie Malik Willis appears closer to making his third start this season with the Titans signing Joshua Dobbs off the Detroit practice squad Wednesday.

17. Tennessee scores twice late to defeat Indiana 23-22 in Gator -

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Tennessee sure knows how to get out of a huge hole.

The Volunteers scored twice in a 30-second span late, using an onside kick to help escape a 13-point deficit, and then held on to stun Indiana 23-22 in the Gator Bowl on Thursday night.

19. No questions asked: Guarantano owns QB position -

One player on Tennessee’s roster was the clear-cut starter at his position months before the season started. The coaches didn’t even need to pretend otherwise to create competition.

Jarrett Guarantano is Tennessee’s quarterback.

20. A ‘good daddy’ fueled Seddon’s reach for the stars -

Rhea Seddon was 21 when man first landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and she, like so many of us, dreamed that day of being an astronaut.

She made it happen, becoming one of the first six women to be accepted into NASA’s Astronaut Corps.

27. Vols' midseason assessments show a team falling behind -

Tennessee’s football players are on fall break this weekend during the open date.

You’ve got to wonder how many players fifth-year UT coach Butch Jones will get back after the break.

28. Vols' shaky start exposes raw nerves as Dawgs roll in -

Tennessee football coach Butch Jones had more than Georgia on his mind this week.

Rumors on message boards and reports on sports talk radio flamed the fires around Jones and the Vols after last Saturday’s 17-13 victory over Massachusetts at Neyland Stadium.

29. Guarantano must prove his worth on the field -

Two games into the season, Quinten Dormady has established himself as Tennessee’s quarterback. For now.

As we have learned in four previous seasons with Butch Jones as coach, everything is subject to change. Both at UT and in previous coaching stops at Central Michigan and Cincinnati, Jones has not been afraid to change quarterbacks when the mood strikes.

30. No. 25 Tennessee pulls off remarkable 42-41 win over Ga Tech -

ATLANTA (AP) — This was a game Tennessee had no business winning.

What a boost for embattled coach Butch Jones in the season opener.

Despite getting dominated statistically and surrendering five rushing touchdowns to new Georgia Tech quarterback TaQuon Marshall, the Volunteers rallied from a pair of two-touchdown deficits in the second half to somehow pull out a 42-41 victory in the second overtime Monday night.

31. Vols at their best when expectations are low -

Based on preseason predictions, the SEC East is pretty much a toss-up between Georgia and Florida. My question: Why not Tennessee?

Granted, the Vols must identify a quarterback. And establish a featured running back. And find more than one playmaker at wide receiver. And fix a defense that was embarrassingly porous late last season.

32. Looks like another 8-4 season for Vols -

Oops. I goofed last year. So did lots of other people who thought Tennessee’s football team would win the SEC East Division and go to the league championship game for the first time since 2007. I predicted the Vols would go 10-2 in the regular season, 6-2 in the SEC, tie Georgia for the East Division title, go to the SEC Championship Game, lose to Alabama for a second time and go to the Orange Bowl.

33. 2 quarterbacks seldom better than 1 -

The old adage holds that if you have two quarterbacks you really have none.

Are you listening, Butch Jones?

Jones continues to send signals that Tennessee may proceed with a plan to use both junior Quinten Dormady and redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano in the opener against Georgia Tech. If the two-quarterback system is successful, the Vols could continue to play both in subsequent games.

34. Wide Receiver U? That’s so 20 years ago -

At the 2015 SEC Media Days, Tennessee coach Butch Jones referred to his school as “the original Wide Receiver U.”

The reference goes back to the days when the Vols were loaded with fast, talented pass receivers on the perimeter. In a heady stretch from 1982-91, UT had six wide receivers selected in the first round of the NFL draft – Anthony Hancock, Willie Gault, Clyde Duncan, Tim McGee, Anthony Miller and Alvin Harper.

35. Time to turn down the flame on Jones’ hot seat -

When it comes to Butch Jones and the recent NFL draft, it’s a matter of perspective. Remember, no Tennessee Vols were drafted in the previous two years, which is a reflection on the recruiting by Jones’ predecessor, Derek Dooley. The fact that Tennessee had six players picked this time around – all in the first four rounds – speaks volumes, to wit:

36. Former Vols QB Dobbs earns Torchbearer honor from school -

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Former Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs has been selected as a Torchbearer, which is billed as the highest student honor given out by the university.

37. Scott the recruiter must now be Scott the OC -

When it comes to offense, Butch Jones thinks he knows what’s best for the Tennessee Vols. And he’s willing to bet his job on it.

By elevating Larry Scott from tight ends coach/special teams coordinator to offensive coordinator, Jones is staying the course. And it’s his own course.

38. Back-to-back Dak? Dobbs shines at Senior Bowl -

To say Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs might be the next Dak Prescott is a stretch. Or is it?

Prescott, the former Mississippi State quarterback, caught the eye of the Dallas Cowboys with his MVP performance in the 2016 Senior Bowl. The Cowboys chose Prescott in the fourth round (No. 135 overall pick) of the 2016 NFL Draft, and it proved a fruitful pick.

39. Dobbs had a great run, but Manning is still No. 1 UT QB -

Tennessee senior Joshua Dobbs has created a quarterback controversy.

Dobbs finished his college career Dec. 30 when UT beat Nebraska 38-24 in the Music City Bowl in Nashville. He accounted for 409 total yards – 291 passing and 118 yards rushing – and was chosen the game’s MVP.

40. Dobbs’ change of heart a great gift to Vol fans -

In the spirit of the holiday season, Joshua Dobbs is the gift that keeps on giving.

Despite all the disappointments of 2016 for Tennessee football, it would be a mistake not to appreciate Dobbs for what he is: a scholar, an athlete, a leader, a role model and a winner.

41. Florida didn’t kill UT’s season; Vanderbilt could -

Tennessee’s primary goal for the 2016 football season was to win the SEC East Division, and the Vols failed. Does that mean the season was a failure? Not yet.

Not until the No. 24-ranked Vols play Vanderbilt on Saturday night (6:30 CST, SEC Network) in Nashville and find out their bowl destination.

42. For better or worse, Dobbs defines Jones era -

Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs will be one of 11 senior scholarship players honored at Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. home finale against Missouri at Neyland Stadium.

Their legacies as Vols largely will be defined against Missouri and at Vanderbilt in their last games of the 2016 season – and by what happens Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge.

43. Vols hit home stretch with chance for East title -

Be happy, Tennessee football fans. November is here, and the Vols (6-3, 2-3 SEC) still have a chance to win the East Division.

It was hard to flush the 24-21 upset loss at South Carolina on Oct. 29, hard to explain star running back Jalen Hurd quitting UT’s team two days later and hard to get excited about last Saturday’s game against Tennessee Tech, which left Neyland Stadium with a 55-0 loss and a good paycheck.

44. Bad week for Jones means losing on, off the field -

If Tennessee football coach Butch Jones thought last Saturday night was bad in Columbia, South Carolina, he had no idea what was waiting when he got back to Knoxville.

Fans were still stewing over UT’s 24-21 loss to unranked South Carolina. It dropped the then-ranked No. 18 Vols (5-3, 2-3 SEC) out of the polls and probably out of contention for the East Division title and SEC Championship game.

45. Vols prepare for ‘grind’ of facing 5 weaker foes -

Tennessee begins the easy part of its football schedule Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. (ESPN2) against South Carolina in Columbia.

Just don’t tell UT coach Butch Jones this is the easy part of the schedule.

46. Grading the Vols -

Tennessee’s football team is spending this week’s open date trying to get healthy after a rugged four-game stretch of SEC football in which they defeated Florida and Georgia and lost to Texas A&M and Alabama.

47. Is this the year the Tide rolls out with a loss? -

Tennessee defensive end LaTroy Lewis was raised in Akron, Ohio, and recalls a special Saturday of football each fall when he was a youth: Ohio State vs. Michigan.

“That’s what I was taught my whole life,” Lewis says, “and then I got down here in the South, and it was kind of like: ‘Is there any other game beside Tennessee and Alabama?’”

48. Now, let’s see how the Vols play as underdogs -

You almost can feel Tennessee is a football team of destiny as the most difficult games of the schedule loom Saturday at Texas A&M and Oct. 15 against Alabama at Neyland Stadium.

There aren’t many successful Hail Mary passes, but the Vols got one last Saturday and beat Georgia 34-31 in Athens. Tennessee trailed Georgia 17-0 in the first half.

49. What’s worse than dating a Gator? Another loss -

If you’re a Tennessee fan hurting from the 11-game losing streak against Florida, put yourself in Corey Vereen’s shoes.

UT’s senior defensive end is from Winter Garden, Florida, and he’s 0-for-3 against his buddies back home. That’s not the worst part for Vereen.

50. High-scoring Ohio a good warmup for Florida game -

Tennessee football returns to normalcy this week, if you call a noon EDT kickoff normal.

The Vols survived a Thursday night scare in the season opener against Appalachian State in Neyland Stadium. Then they roared from behind last Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway and beat Virginia Tech 45-24 in the Pilot Flying J. Battle at Bristol before a college football record crowd of 156,990.

51. ‘Breathtaking’ transformation in Bristol -

This isn’t just any football game. It’s the Battle at Bristol.

When Tennessee plays Virginia Tech on Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway, about 150,000 fans are expected to be in attendance, making it the largest crowd ever to watch a football game.

52. Big stage, bigger risks for Vols at Bristol -

Imagine if Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd hadn’t recovered the fumble by UT quarterback Joshua Dobbs in the end zone for a touchdown in overtime last Thursday night.

If an Appalachian State player had recovered, the Vols would have been doomed by a field goal on the Mountaineers’ overtime possession. Instead, Hurd’s fumble recovery and Tennessee’s defensive stand resulted in a 20-13 victory at Neyland Stadium.

53. Players to watch as Vols make run at SEC title -

Less than a week from opening kickoff, and all is well with the UT’s football team.

Or is it?

There has been good and bad and in-between during the Vols’ fall camp, as is the case every year with every team.

54. Hendersonville's Hurd eyes the record -

Jalen Hurd knows right where he stands among Tennessee’s running backs of the past and wants to be No. 1 in career rushing yards at the end of the 2016 season.

The junior from Hendersonville Beech High School needs 892 yards to surpass Travis Henry as UT’s career rushing leader.

55. Dobbs’ health is priority No. 1 on road to being No. 1 -

Tennessee’s football team had nine players earn All-SEC preseason honors and got the nod as favorite to win the East Division as SEC Media Days concluded last week in Hoover, Alabama.

All signs point to the Vols making a return to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta for the first time since 2007, with their two biggest games are at Neyland Stadium this year against Florida on Sept. 24 and Alabama on Oct. 15.

56. After the bowl rush: What lies ahead for UT sports -

Don’t worry, UT fans, the 2016 football season will be here before you know it.

There is always football withdrawal after the bowl season, and spring practices are nothing like the real thing. So until the 2016 season opener against Appalachian State in Neyland Stadium on Sept. 3, we’ll have to settle for other items in which to indulge.

57. Can VU pull off one more SEC win against Vols? -

Tennessee football fans already are talking about their bowl destinations for the Christmas holidays.

Will it be the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, the Music City Bowl in Nashville or the Outback Bowl in Tampa?

58. Dangerous time to play emotionally charged Tigers -

Tennessee’s football team may be headed into a perfect storm Saturday night at Missouri.

It’s been an emotional whirlwind the last two weeks for the Tigers (5-5, 1-5 SEC), and they will have plenty of motivation against the Vols (6-4, 3-3).

59. North Texas could never upset the Vols, right? -

No way Tennessee’s football team can lose Saturday’s homecoming game against North Texas, one of the worst teams in college football.

Right?

Tennessee (5-4) was a 40.5-point favorite early in the week coming off a 27-24 victory over South Carolina last Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

60. UT-South Carolina won’t be the same without the head ball coach -

I miss Steve Spurrier. It won’t be the same without Spurrier coaching South Carolina when Tennessee (4-4, 2-3 SEC) plays host to the Gamecocks (3-5, 1-5) on Saturday.

It wasn’t the same this week without Spurrier throwing a jab or two at UT leading up to the game.

61. Success looks like five-game win streak for Vols -

Leaves are changing colors, a chill is in the fall air and Tennessee’s football schedule is getting softer.

Happens every year.

We’ve all heard by now how Tennessee is the best 3-4 team in college football. Now is the time to prove it.

62. Reveiz know what Vols need to snap streak against Alabama -

Tennessee place-kicker Fuad Reveiz was anxious and nervous much of the week leading up the Vols’ game against Alabama on Oct. 16, 1982.

It was a tall order for the Vols.

Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant had an 11-game winning streak against UT. The Crimson Tide was 5-0, ranked No. 2 in the country and coming off a 42-21 victory against then-No. 3 Penn State.

63. Here’s how Vols grade going into second half -

Order has been restored in Vol Nation, at least for now.

Tennessee’s football team restored it with a 38-31 victory over then-No. 19 Georgia last Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

UT’s rally from a 24-3 deficit has much of the fan base back on board with Vols coach Butch Jones and his staff after a precarious week leading up to the game.

64. Vols coach struggling on and off the field -

Please, coach. Just say the right thing. Please. Tennessee football coach Butch Jones lost another press conference Monday, two days after his team blew a 14-0 lead and lost to Arkansas 24-20 at Neyland Stadium.

65. Heat really on for Jones against Arkansas -

It’s been a long week for Tennessee football coach Butch Jones. Kickoff can’t come soon enough for Jones and his staff Saturday night when the Vols (2-2, 0-1 SEC) play host to Arkansas (1-3, 0-1) at Neyland Stadium.

66. Despite rhetoric, Florida game critical for Jones -

Tennessee’s Butch Jones will coach the biggest game of his three-year tenure with the Vols – and probably the biggest of his entire coaching career – at Florida on Saturday.

Like it or not, Jones is carrying the weight of UT’s 10-game losing streak to Florida on his shoulders.

67. With Gators looming, Vols try to focus on WCU -

Talk about taking the wind out of Neyland Stadium and UT fans, Oklahoma sure did it last Saturday.

Tennessee’s football team will play host to Western Carolina on Saturday in its only matchup this year against a team of Football Championship Subdivision status, formerly Division I-AA.

68. At long last, a compelling home opener for Vols -

Finally, Tennessee’s football team has an attractive home opener in Neyland Stadium. It’s been a while.

The No. 23-ranked Vols (1-0) play host to No. 19 Oklahoma (1-0) Saturday at 6 ET in their best home opener in years.

69. Rocky Top in Nashville: Good for city, bad for Vols -

I can’t help but get fired up for a college football game between Tennessee and Virginia Tech in front of 150,000 people at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Brilliant idea.

Too bad “The Battle of Bristol” won’t happen until Sept. 10, 2016.

70. Vols nearly set on offense as season approaches -

With Tennessee’s football team three weeks into fall camp, the offensive depth charts are set at some positions, while others remain open.

UT coach Butch Jones enters the 2015 season with no questions at quarterback or running back. His has plenty of receivers and all should get their share of playing time.

71. Freshmen to again play key roles for Vols -

Despite doing so in 2014, Tennessee football coach Butch Jones doesn’t want to make a habit of placing freshmen in prominent roles.

You don’t win SEC titles with freshmen.

UT went 7-6 last season, 3-5 in the SEC, and won the TaxSlayer Bowl while setting a school record by playing 21 true freshmen in the season-opener.

72. Preseason analysis: Vols will defeat Oklahoma, finish 8-4 -

Tennessee’s football team has something to prove as it concludes the first week of preseason practices and moves forward to the 2015 season.

The Vols must prove they belong in the national picture in Butch Jones’ third year as coach.

73. Kelly, Berry battle for safety spot in legacy showdown -

Todd Kelly Jr. concludes his first spring practice with Tennessee’s football team this week in a heated competition for a safety job.

No surprise there.

Kelly, former all-state player at Webb School of Knoxville, was an impact player as a true freshman in 2014.

74. Vols’ Dobbs embraces the role of ‘CEO quarterback’ -

Joshua Dobbs enters his junior season as Tennessee’s undisputed No. 1 quarterback and team leader, the player most responsible for the Vols’ relevance again in SEC football.

Perhaps Dobbs will guide the Vols to an SEC East Division title, or even a league championship. Maybe we will see Dobbs in the NFL one day, or designing a spacecraft for NASA.

75. Jones, Vols make honor roll with recruiting class -

KNOXVILLE – Butch Jones has done it again.

Tennessee’s football coach has created a national buzz with his 2015 recruiting class.

UT finished with the No. 4 class in the nation as rated by 247Sports and ended up ranked No. 5 by Rivals when the Feb. 4 national signing day was over.

76. Jones continues to impress with recruiting skills -

KNOXVILLE – National signing day is in the books, and Tennessee football coach Butch Jones and his staff can relax and savor another top-tier recruiting class.

Oops. Wait a minute. No time off for Jones and his assistants when it comes to recruiting. They’re already busy putting together the 2016 class, and looking at recruits for future classes.

77. Murfreesboro, Nashville players get jump on UT careers -

KNOXVILLE – Jack Jones didn’t want to waste any time getting started with his football career at the University of Tennessee, so he graduated in December from Murfreesboro Oakland High School.

78. Vol players see TaxSlayer win as a big step for program -

KNOXVILLE – Christmas break has come and gone for the University of Tennessee’s football team. Now it’s back to business.

The Vols return to campus for practice Saturday and, after a Sunday practice, fly to Jacksonville for the Jan. 2 game against Iowa in the TaxSlayer Bowl, formerly the Gator Bowl.

79. Dobbs the latest in line of dual-threat UT quarterbacks -

If the University of Tennessee’s football team gains bowl eligibility with a victory Saturday at Vanderbilt, it can look back to a quarterback change Oct. 25 against Alabama as a pivotal point in the season.

80. Just when we started to feel good about UT football -

KNOXVILLE – All seemed so right for the University of Tennessee’s football team for 36 hours or so after last Saturday’s 50-16 victory over Kentucky at Neyland Stadium.

UT (5-5, 2-4 SEC) won its second straight conference game and moved within one victory of gaining bowl eligibility for the first time since 2010.

81. Vols unlikely to repeat November 2013 collapse -

KNOXVILLE – University of Tennessee football coach Butch Jones doesn’t have to remind his team about the disappointing fade last November.

UT went 0-3 to start what has historically been its best month of football. First, the Vols lost to Missouri and Auburn. Then a 14-10 loss to Vanderbilt in Neyland Stadium knocked the Vols out of bowl eligibility.

82. With Dobbs at QB, Vols look set for bowl season -

As the jubilation settled this week, the University of Tennessee’s football team and its fans still savored last Saturday’s 45-42 overtime victory at South Carolina.

This week’s open date is so much sweeter for UT (4-5, 1-4 SEC) because of the stunning comeback victory.

83. Vols resurrect fond memories of ‘Wide Receiver U’ -

KNOXVILLE – None of the receivers on the University of Tennessee football team were born when the program was dubbed “Wide Receiver U” in the 1980s.

Guys like Tim McGee, Anthony Miller, Alvin Harper and Carl Pickens paved the way for UT to become the premier destination for wide receivers seeking stardom into the 1990s.

84. Other than QB, both lines and kickers, Vols all set -

KNOXVILLE – One week into fall camp, University of Tennessee football coach Butch Jones and his assistants are just getting started.

They must assemble a new offensive line – the entire starting unit from 2013 has departed – and pinpoint a starting quarterback.
