NASHVILLE (AP) — Trustees of Tennessee's only publicly funded historically Black university were removed Thursday under legislation signed into law by Republican Gov. Bill Lee. Black lawmakers and community leaders said state leaders, a majority of whom are white, are unfairly targeting Tennessee State University.

4. Metro Action provides AC for at-risk households -

The Metropolitan Action Commission’s Summer Cooling program provides air conditioning units at no cost to at-risk residents.

The agency’s cooling program prioritizes income eligible residents who are: 60 years or older; physically disabled or a medical condition that is worsened by extreme temperatures; or households with children age 5 or younger.

5. Tennessee State to become first HBCU to add ice hockey -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee State University announced Wednesday that it will become the first historically Black college and university to introduce ice hockey.

The school plans to have a men's team playing at the club level in 2024, with a goal of fielding Division I men's and women's teams "in the near future."

7. State unemployment rate holds steady -

Unemployment in Tennessee remained unchanged between August and September, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development reports.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September came in at 3.4% and is just 0.2 of a percentage point away from Tennessee’s all-time low rate of 3.2%.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Environmental services company Waste Management has announced a three-year commitment of $300,000 for environmental sustainability research at Tennessee State University and scholarships and internships for the school's students.

10. Amazon to give Tennessee State $800K for professorship chair -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Amazon is donating $800,000 to Tennessee State University for an endowed professorship chair in the computer science department.

The historically Black university in Nashville said the money will fund the professorship for four years.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee State University is clearing the account balances of students returning to study this fall, the school said.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Mementos from Tennessee State University and 13 other historically Black colleges and universities will be launched into orbit aboard Boeing's CST-100 Starliner this week.

The items will be part of hundreds of pounds of cargo inside the unmanned spacecraft as it begins its second mission to orbit for NASA's Commercial Crew Program, the university said in a news release.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Bank of America is contributing $1 million in a partnership with Tennessee State University to help students finish college and find employment.

The bank recently committed $1 billion over four years to advance racial equality and economic opportunity and $25 million for skills improvement for African Americans and Hispanic-Latino students, the university said in a news release.

COOKEVILLE (AP) — In a move that will transform higher education in Tennessee, Gov. Bill Haslam signed a bill that overhauls the governing boards of some of the state's universities.
