MEMPHIS (AP) — The stage is set for spirited races for three open U.S. House seats in Tennessee.

Voters on Thursday chose Republican and Democratic candidates in House districts where longtime GOP Congressman John Duncan Jr. retired and fellow Republicans Marsha Blackburn and Diane Black moved on to seek other political jobs. NASHVILLE (AP) — Republican voters will decide Thursday whether to re-nominate Lamar Alexander, a 40-year veteran of Tennessee politics, to a third term in the U.S. Senate.

They will also decide if they want to stick with embattled Republican U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais despite a series of personal scandals that have dogged him since he was first elected in 2010, and whether to retain or replace any of three Democratic state Supreme Court justices up for another eight-year term.

Alexander said he received formal notification on Thursday that he has qualified for the Aug. 7 primary. His eight opponents in the GOP nomination contest include state Rep. Joe Carr of Murfreesboro and former Shelby County Commissioner George Flinn.

NASHVILLE (AP) — A Tennessee Republican congressman won re-election on Tuesday overcoming revelations that he once had an affair with a patient and urged her to get an abortion.

Rep. Scott DesJarlais, a Jasper physician before going to Congress, beat Democratic challenger Eric Stewart on Tuesday. With 76 percent of precincts reporting, DesJarlais had 111,988 votes, or 57 percent, compared with Stewart's 83,835 votes, or 43 percent.

NASHVILLE (AP) - The executive committee of the Tennessee Republican Party has rejected challenges to two primary election results.

The panel on Friday decided to uphold the winners in the 9th Congressional District and in state House District 71. The full executive committee came to the decision that followed the unanimous recommendation of a subcommittee that reviewed the contest.
