1. Participatory budgeting voting begins Oct. 1 -

The 35 project ideas generated by Nashville/Davidson County’s participatory budgeting program that will be eligible for consideration when voting begins were unveiled last week.

The committee of budget delegates collectively identified 35 potential projects from the 1,321 ideas submitted by Davidson County residents for inclusion on the ballot for this cycle. One project suggestion was included from each of the 35 council districts across the city.

2. Is massive MCC too small? Expansion talk is growing -

The Music City Center, built because Nashville had outgrown the old convention center, is now in that same position – not big enough to handle all the business coming its way. More space is needed because groups are already booking events through 2033 and even a decade beyond.

3. The skeptics had it wrong -

A chuckle is the initial response from Charles Starks when asked if the Music City Center has been more successful than he could have imagined. Then the president and CEO of the massive downtown facility settles into his chair and reveals the moment he knew that one of the most controversial buildings in Nashville history would someday be hailed as a landmark achievement.

5. Frost Brown Todd adds Masterson as partner -

Brian Masterson has joined Frost Brown Todd’s tax team as a partner.

Based in Nashville, Masterson has nearly 25 years of tax experience, including advising clients on a variety of state and federal tax matters, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and resolving disputes related to post-closing adjustments. He also works with family offices regarding how to structure the acquisition and disposition of private investments.

6. Heupel, Anderson, Hooker headline AP's SEC midseason awards -

Will Anderson is one of the nation's top pass rushers. Hendon Hooker has been among the hottest passers.

The Alabama linebacker and Tennessee quarterback headline the midseason Southeastern Conference awards released Wednesday by The Associated Press. Anderson is the top defensive player so far and Hooker grrabbed the offensive honors as the two players head into Saturday's showdown between No. 3 Alabama and No. 6 Tennessee at Neyland Stadium.

7. Littler selects Strawn as managing shareholder -

Littler, an employment and labor law practice representing management, has appointed Bradley Strawn as regional office managing shareholder of the firm’s Nashville office, succeeding Jennifer Robinson, who has stepped down to focus on her practice.

8. Is COVID-19 the death of shaking hands? -

On March 8, 2020, the 8:45 morning service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Franklin was unfolding as it did every Sunday. Just after the Prayers of the People, the rector offered The Peace. “May the peace of the Lord be always with you,” Father Rusty McCown said to the congregation. “And also with you,” they responded.

9. New wing & a prayer: BNA building for uncertain times -

Nashville International Airport should be enjoying its best year ever in 2020. After all, 2019 was a record year for the airport, as was 2018.

In fact, BNA has had seven record-breaking years in a row, with more than 18 million passengers traveling to and from Nashville last year, an increase of 14% compared to 2018. And 2019 and 2018 were the only other years the airport exceeded 1 million passengers every month.

10. Turner out, Lee in as interim Vandy AD -

Malcolm Turner has resigned as Vanderbilt athletic director after one year on the job, and Candice Storey Lee has been named interim athletic director effectively immediately.

Vanderbilt announced Tuesday the school had accepted Turner’s resignation. Turner was president of the NBA G League when hired in December 2018 by Vanderbilt to replace David Williams. He started Feb. 1, 2019.

11. Tennessee Q3 exports fell $500M from year ago -

Tennessee’s exports fell by more than $500 million for the third quarter compared to the same period last year, a 6.6% loss, the latest “Global Commerce” trade report from MTSU’s Business and Economic Research Center finds.

12. Working Mother likes Baker Donelson -

Baker Donelson has been named by Working Mother to its 12th annual “Best Law Firms for Women” list. This is the third consecutive year the firm has been included in this prominent list, which recognizes firms that utilize best practices in recruiting, retaining, promoting and developing women lawyers.

13. Convention Center giving $6M to African American music museum -

NASHVILLE (AP) — The National Museum of African American Music will receive $6 million from Nashville's Convention Center Authority.

An authority news release state it unanimously voted on Thursday to provide the money as part of its commitment to the museum. The CCA says its commitment stems from former business leader and civil rights activist Francis S. Guess, who helped spearhead the museum effort. Guess died in 2015.

17. Music City Center faces its ‘Super Bowl’ moment: $500M in business on the line with August convention -

In sales, it’s all about leads. And Nashville is about to get 2,500 of them in the highly-competitive field of hosting major conventions.

The highly coveted American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) convention is coming to Nashville’s Music City Center Aug. 9-12.

18. Redevelopers of Nashville's old convention center listen to market -

Ever since ground was broken on the Music City Center, the fate of its predecessor, the Nashville Convention Center, has been in flux. And settled. And in flux again.

Now, after a proposed medical mart fell through because a Dallas-based developer could never secure enough leases to advance financing and site redevelopment, a local outfit is stepping up to take a crack at the centrally located downtown site.
