NASHVILLE (AP) — A Tennessee lawmaker has resigned from the state legislature, saying he needs to spend more time with his family and tend to his winery business.

News outlets report 59-year-old Rep. Bill Sanderson, R-Kenton, announced his retirement would take effect at noon Wednesday. He was serving his fifth term.

5. Bill requiring one hour of PE for TN students fails after dropped ball - Friday, May 5, 2017

Legislation requiring one hour of physical education per week for elementary students stumbled and fell Monday when it hit a procedural hurdle.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Roger Kane went down in the House Finance, Ways and Means Subcommittee after a recount of sorts, one in which a member didn’t vote and then was allowed to cast a “no” vote killing the bill.

6. Call for moving James K. Polk's body put off until next year - Friday, May 5, 2017

NASHVILLE (AP) — A resolution calling for the body of President James K. Polk to be exhumed from the grounds of the Tennessee Capitol won't be taken up in the state House this session.

The Senate in March passed the measure calling for the bodies of the 11th president and his wife, Sarah, to be moved about 50 miles to the grounds of the James K. Polk Home and Museum in Columbia.

The chamber voted 85-0 to approve the bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Bill Sanderson of Kenton on Thursday. The Senate earlier this week approved the measure on a 29-1 vote.
